  1. Last year I was coming from Dubai to Sharjah on E311 in the third lane. Unfortunately for me there was a car stopped in the 3rd lane and with moving traffic I could not shift lanes and had to stop behind him. I was surprised when I saw him come out of his car in the middle of the road, as he approached me I opened the window and all he could say was Petrol. He was smelling drunk and I tried to maneuver myself around but with the heavy traffic moving quickly around me I couldn't. This guy walked back to his car and let the handbrake go in neutral, with the angle on the road his car gently but firmly hit mine creating a dent. At this point I called the police and informed them they had to come as this guy was drunk and walking on the road without understanding the dangers. A good Samaritan stopped to get both our cars onto the hard shoulder, but all this guy could do was say Petrol. Once the police came in they issued the accident report, and recently asked us to drive off and they would handle this guy as per the rule of Dubai. Unfortunately people get drunk and still feel they can drive without any incidents, unfortunately for this guy, he forgot to fill in his car tank before he filled in himself.

  2. If the cars will stay strong for 20 years they wont be selling this much. Old cars built to last, news are built to fail after warranty so you will need to buy new one.

  3. What are the strangest things you have seen on the roads in UAE? I recently saw a guy in a convertible Mercedes SL with a hookah burning away in the passenger seat. The driver was sucking away on the pipe, driving without a care in the world. Live for the moment bro?

  4. The clue is in the title SUV - A sports utility vehicle will fall apart simply because like any other 'organism' without a true purpose in life it's simply confused and self destructs in a case of pitiable psychological confusion. Seriously, a life spent navigating the speed humps at Union Coop and ferrying munchkins to school with the odd 'off road' adventure [driving to the lake at Al Qudra possibly], would want me to have my makers design failure ar an earlier rate!

  5. I dunno if this counts but I once saw a guy in a Nissan Capsula doing rounds of what you guys call Iftar bowl with a fully grown Lion in the back. And we crossed him many times during the drive and even later at inflation where he let the lion out to stretch it's legs

  6. Actually if you look at it only Western Europe is the odd one out. Honking is a regular feature in the rest of the world

  7. I understood it as It's OK for other people to speed at 140kph, but if you are upset by it, call the Police and tell them. Taligating is totally acceptable if your car will go at 140kph and the other drivers do not move out of the way, if you are upset about them not moving, call the Police and tell them. Driving dangerously, either by tailgating, or apparently allowing yourself to be tailgated gets a fine, if either or both are uset, call the Police and tell them. If your registration number has less than 3 digits, do what ever you like, if I call the Police ... I may find your Emirates ID card revoked. Simple, no?

  8. With present approach of timed spare parts and built to fail cars from almost all car manufacturers, very soon we might have an expiry dates on the cars even.

  11. I think I possibly saw someone driving a BMW that had worked out what the strange stick on the side of his steering wheel was for and actually used it when changing lanes - does that apply?

  14. I need to copyright this term too. lol. "Timed Spare Parts" - They are timed to fail "EXACTLY" after the fixed period of time or engineer will loose the job to design them if they last any longer than their warranty period. Prime example: AC Delco and Solite Batteries - 1 year and 1 month. Solargard tinting - 1-2 years Dunlop grandtrek - 30-40k km

  15. This article is complete rubbish and hardly provides any detail about some of the so called issues itself. Their sources are ars.com, caranddriver.com, usnews.com but it looks like they generalized so much that they can't even properly describe what the issues are. Some examples: Comment about the FIAT 500X: 'immensely weak when it comes to its overall structure'. I went to the actual review on cars.com and cannot not find any complaint about that. Comment about the Kia Sorento: ';as it is not the best when it comes to its handling. For that reason, one should think carefully before committing to this rather faulty vehicle' . WhatCar describes the car like this: In this way i can also review cars. Looks more like a clickbait website instead of a proper car review website.

  16. Touareg for me any time over the Tiguan - because, as @Gaurav mentions, it's the flagship. It also has most of the same underpinning of the Porsche Cayenne without the expensive (usually non-working) suspension. I am also a big fan because it is a very safe car [saved the life of a very good friend of mine]. VW has had it's quality (and emissions!) problems, but the Touareg has remained pretty solid throughout. Service history on them is important.

  17. A very drunk/sleepy driver on road, almost falling asleep on his steering wheel every 10secs. I almost called the police to complain but saw a police patrol car just behind that guys car.. hence assumed that the cops will stop him. But that was some scary shit.. no idea why the hell he attempted to drive in that state.

  18. Set the budget first, so that you end up with a fair comparison and not like many buyer start from 50k and then end up buying 90k car. Tiguan is compact SUV vs Touareg, so space wise Touareg wins. If daily kms fuel usage is not of big concern for you, I would suggest Touareg any day, being proven through the test of time unlike Tiguan or any other recent release. Also, Touareg is a VW flagship model, so chances of cheap material or timed spare parts will be far less. Last but not least, whichever option you buy, make sure its well serviced and if its with full dealer service history then its worth more in its value, so you can buy at premium (worth it). German cars are good for first 5 years in GCC, then next 5 years are totally dependent on how well they were taken care previously (not forgiving like Japanese and US marque).

  20. I had heard before that Indian cars had upgraded horns because of excessive usage but I always thought it was an urban myth. Anyway, it's an old article but you learn something new every day. https://jalopnik.com/audi-is-designing-extra-loud-horns-for-india-5896859 It's borderline rude to honk at someone in Europe unless its an emergency and the roads are generally peaceful unless you're driving like a dick. I found it crazy when I first came here how much people honk at each other but its something you learn to ignore. If someone decides to have a mental episode and lose their mind and ruin their own day, that's their problem not mine. I'll keep driving nicely and not ruin my day.

  21. I'm not really sure to be happy for Hummer (Iconic brand) come-back or be sad to be back in an electric avatar this time! Although it's still a story, but sound quite real and relate-able when they are preparing for super bowl commercial. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30473542/hummer-returns-electric-gmc-pickup-report/

  22. That's not "timed" that's just the life expectancy of xyz. Everything has one. Cars arnt built to last forever either. Specially to keep production costs down and profits up in an era where most car manufacturers are struggling to stay afloat. Unless if you are douche like Nissan who know their CVTs are faulty and yet keep producing and selling it to the public. That's a different story. Heard a major lawsuit is on the Horizon regarding this very issue

  23. In my country it is illegal to honk at anyone or anything unless there is some sort of emergency, and honking is required to warn other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, drunken/unlicensed taxi drivers, and/or drunken/unlicensed bus drivers of the danger. If however, everyone who honked illegally were ticketed by real cops and the fines were collected and not stolen by bogus cops, we could wipe out our national debt in a few days.

Now if car in front of me slows down w/o brake light and I can see that there is nothing in front of that car, I change lane or give little beep to those sleepy head.

  30. They got a bad reputation in the past because of one bad series (pre 2007). After that, they seem to be dead-on reliable, and definitely more pleasing than these horrible CVT things.

  31. Hi @Rajeevan Vickneswaran, @Denver Martins, @Michael sammy, @Gawie Herholdt, @balaji0007 Welcome to Carnity Off-road Club. Could you please share the following details: Which 4x4 vehicle you will be driving? Do you have any previous offroading experience? Ensure that your front and rear recovery points (tow hooks) are in good condition.

  32. Go for the Touareg although not a big fan at all. Driven it a lot and not impressed with the drive feel or quality. Much better than Jap or Korean SUVs in the same class but nothing to write home about. Also it's been around longer and more common than the Tig so more bits and bobs around new and used and probably cheaper. But get the best one you can afford because like all German cars when they are running they are great but when they raise their legs up in the sky it can be a real PITA and you don't want to be buying someone else's lemon

Due to the shortage of time last week, there was some unfinished business on the dunes south of the MBR Solar Panels. So lets attempt to reach there this time starting from Al Faqa. The area provides long range dunes that offer a perfect playground to ramp up the pace a bit and stretch the legs of both car and driver. We will explore the area, and alternate between side sloping, ridge crossing, and enjoy whatever this area has to offer. This drive is for Fewbie and above level only. When: 24 January 2020, Friday Meeting time: 06:45 AM, the convoy will move sharply at 07:00 AM Where: Al Faqa GPS Coordinate: https://goo.gl/maps/dt57TRJ3ak4SrCkX8 Level of drive: Fewbie and above Type of Car: Any proper 4x4 with front and back tow hooks and 10 inches of ground clearance. Plan: Drive and enjoy until about 12 PM, with some small breaks in between to have breakfast and snacks. What to bring along: Some snacks, plenty of water - whatever you like with little extra to share, smiles, stories, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Approximate finish time: 12 PM
