  9. The only issue with 285 upgrade will be, the speedometer will be slightly off. @Kailas never got his done. I did mine, but I could have done with the Tazer JL (I bought it later). They are scaring you with the warranty, as this process is a grand in billing for them. edit: I did not do the software flash immediately and did it later about one/two services after the upgrades. I did it due to my OCD, as in the back of my mind the KM reading is not right and as a result I couldn’t sleep properly in most nights.

  10. Hello fellow Jeeper (yay I get to say this now), when you upsize to bigger/wider tires, the speedometer is not accurate anymore and the transmission shifts is no longer optimum (it was optimized for stock size tires 255). Bring a measuring tape and $20 (for adding new VIN license) and with the magic of OBD + JScan app we can calibrate the TCM so the speedometer & shift timings are calibrated to new tire height 😁 OR you can remain as is, the automatic shifting will be a bit late (high RPM as you said), but since you'll be driving manual, you sir are the Computer and you control the shifting 😊

  17. I found this somewhere on the web: So take a AA battery and attach the + and - to the following wires: * Pins A and D * Pins B and E * Pins I and M * Pins J and N It could be that the Mitsubishi radios have the ground wire attached to the metal mounting frame of the radio. In any case the ground wire can easily be made yourself by connecting a wire from the car frame and using this as your ground. any location where you have something bolted to the frame of the car would usually do (make sure there is no paint layer in between).

  24. Dear Desert Drivers, Thank you for signing-up for this FB+ drive on Saturday. This area South of Nahel offers beautiful dunes, generally empty. Sharp ridges, deep bowls, high climbs, it has everything, and beautiful views in addition. Some faces are steep, and it can be quite impressive in some occasions. Be sure you come fully awake, with a car in top condition. Current confirmed attendance @Stumpy Paj @Amr Aydin @Gurcharan Mehta @KAMALIO @Gary F @Krishna R @Tharun Kumar V @Zed @Pascal @Ale Vallecchi Wait List @Benjamin (1) @Abdul Basit Khan (2) @Deepak Eswar, this is a Fewbie Plus drive, and you current level is FB, I'm sorry, but you cannot attend or be on the waitlist. @Paolo Pellegrini, your registered level is FB+, but you have not yet driven at this level with @Carnity, and your last drive with us was 5 months ago. I will ask you to do at least one FB drive, before attending FB+. This is to ensure you can enjoy and remain comfortable with the drive level. The grading structure has been recently updated accordingly. https://carnity.com/forums/topic/16479-off-road-club-grading-structure-v30/#comment-125525 Thank you for your understanding

  28. Hi @Frederic added myself to WaitList. Torn between choosing this or go for @Srikumar's Newbie Sweihan just to meet him and pick up my walkie-talkie πŸ˜… , but the promise of high-paced drive from Solar Park to Sweihan maybe better to test my new Cherokee V8. I'm also guessing this high-paced drive will have less chance of shovelling too πŸ™ cos I'll be fasting 😊

  37. Thanks so much for the advices! @Gaurav, @Frederic & @GauravSoni!! Given everything I a sticking to the Pajero- Sorry to pathfinders and the X.. I just can't seem to like the look, I'll go with the energy that @GauravSoni has! I test drove a 2012 3.8 Pajero yesterday and its 1st owner very well maintained car at 220K kms and the price is at 30 and still negotiable. First things first, I floored the car on D and it didn't upshift before hitting 6K RPM (Side note: the poor dude literally held on to everything he could and I saw his life flash right in front of him, he asked me to slow down and after a few moments said: I never knew it can make this sound). Anyways, Should I also re-check it in triptonic and floor it on the 1st gear?? In addition to that, I tried the car at 4H and 2H and felt extra engine noise at 4H when ever the revs were around 2-3K RPM like some extra friction. Slight alignment issue and the infamous steering vibration on braking at 100+ km/h. Other than that everything was fantastic. So far I really think its a great deal plus he will get the timing belt changed and a regular service done before we close the deal, (last was done at 120K kms). Let me know if you guys see any red flags? Plus please recommend a trusted garage for a detailed inspection before I move forward. I also would like to know what are some things I really need to get checked at the garage? All advice and tips are more than welcome! Thanks again!!

  38. Hi @Ashok chaturvedi, this is not an FJ-specific thingy, I have a marshal friend who drives his Jeep in 4L 3rd gear consistently and some Nissan buddies also drive in 4L 3rd gear. I will get into the general stuff first, and at the end dive specific to A750F transmission which is used by FJ Cruiser to answer your question mathematically 😁 1. Generally for older 4-speed & 5-speed automatic, people drive in 4H 2nd gear and downshift to 4H 1st gear when climbing or need more torque. In contrast for modern 6-speed & 7-speed automatic, some I've noticed drive in 4L 3rd or 4th gear. They're pretty similar, and I'll prove it mathematically at the end of this post... 2. My Nissan buddies drive in 4L 3rd gear because driving in 4L allows them to turn off VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control - computer will try to brake to fix understeer & oversteer), TCS (Traction Control System - brakes spinning wheel + cut-off fuel to engine and/or close throttle valve to reduce torque) and ABLS (Active Brake Limited Slip - Nissan's version of Toyota A-TRAC), as can be seen from this manual section: 3. If you're already in 4L, during stucks you don't need to shift from 4H > Neutral > 4L > 1st gear 'cos you're already in 4L, which sounds like an excuse a lazy driver would make πŸ˜‚ FJ Cruiser A750F transmission: 4H or 4L? These are the Gear Ratios for FJ Cruiser / any car with Toyota A750F transmission: Now I'll probably do a deeper dive with diagram what these different gear ratios mean, but for now I will use a cheat calculator to produce the numbers: Problem Question: I want to drive 50 km/h (31 mph) in sand, what do I use? *The 50km/h is intentional as some manuals recommend this speed when driving in 4L, and also on average we usually drive below this speed for Newbie to FewbiePlus Putting the A750 Gear Ratio numbers above, you can easily reach 50km/h in 4H 1st Gear after around 4000 rpm, which is what you'll probably do when climbing a steep dune... then shift to 2nd gear to keep RPM below 3000 for noise & fuel-efficiency. 3.727 : Differential Ratio / Final Axle Gear Ratio 31.6" : Tire Diameter, FJ stock is 265/70R17 31 mph : Desired Speed (50km/h) 3.520 : 1st Gear Ratio 4L and Gear Reduction Transfer Case in 4H is 1:1 (mentioned in A750F spec as High 1.000 above), but when you switch to 4L, it becomes 2.566:1 , this is why 4L in 1st Gear is slower and useful for crawling (but still with torque). But for the sake of fun, how much engine RPM do we need to make 31 MPH in 4LO 1st Gear ? Transmission Ratio now becomes = 2.566 (4LO) x 3.520 (1st Gear) = 9.032 Your Tachometer is usually maximum 7000 rpm, so this 4LO 1st gear will not do, let's skip to 4LO 3rd gear: Transmission Ratio now becomes = 2.566 (4LO) x 1.400 (3rd Gear) = 3.592 And there you have it, using 4LO in 3rd Gear, you will reach 50 km/h (31 mph) after about 4000 rpm engine speed... very similar to 4H in 1st Gear... To recap: If you trust the factory's book recommendation and will not go above 50 km/h in sand, then 4LO sounds safe as it disables all those pesky electronics (VDC, TCS, ABLS, ABS) without pulling any fuse. Otherwise if you're driving long-range dunes and flats and will go beyond 50 km/h in sand, you may want to use 4HI + kill-switch to ensure ABS, TCS, VSC are off.
