Highway to the Sun (Murqaab to Solar Park) - Drive Report "Inside you there is an artist you don't know about" - Rumi I always hope, and do my best, to challenge the members who join our drives, at any level. Very often, the challenges will not only come from without, and be of a technical or mechanical nature, but will be mostly from within, related to our willingness to go beyond our mental limitations. Our cars are all desert-ready (or we would not allow them to drive), and the sets of skills needed for each drive are already there (for the older members), and/or always explained and demonstrated by the Leaders, who repeat them any time a reminder is needed. What we have all lacked, at one time or another, is the conviction that a maneuver is possible., that even I can make it, that my car can manage that precise obstacle, that what one things is impossible is actually possible. Therefore, because I am convinced (by the fact that I myself managed to overcome), that inside each of our members there is an off-roader that one doesn't know (yet) about, I always do my best to bring that yet invisible off-roader out in the light, and make our members aware that, they too, have what it takes. At Absolute Newbie, and Newbie levels, this discovery is even more important, as it is what provides the drive and enthusiasm to continue, and eventually become addicted to this wonderful activity. Yesterday's drive had also this objective: testing the convoy's resolve to overcome obstacles usually more apt for a Fewbie level (even though in complete safety, which for Carnity is paramount). Discovering that "artist" in each of us. Hence, we launched into the tall yellow dunes just outside Murqaab, straight crossing and side sloping our way through them, briefly paused while coasting on the Highway to Solar Park, and turned off of it mid-way, to enter the testing part of the drive: the tall, tight, soft, and blindingly white dunes of Lisaili. Usually not a Newbie terrain, this is where the convoy gave its best, not so much in those, many, stretches where all went well, but rather in those few patches where the sand was soft, the slopes high and steep, and the ridges were hiding rock formations or bushes. With few exceptions, I felt most drivers had to push beyond their comfort zone, to either solve a refusal, climb a slope, or descend from a ridge. I trust that nobody took my pushing them over the radio in a personal way (I am sorry if this was the case): I am very proud and happy that in each occasion the convoy responded with determination and discipline, which eventually allowed us to reach our goal. My compliments and thanks go to @Lakshmi Narasimhan for a very good and disciplined Second Lead, to our Senior Advisor @Mehmet Volga for centering the convoy, moving along its length to supervise any refusal, and to @Shaaz Sha for sweeping us safely and effectively (good job to both of you, Mehmet and Shaaz for fixing a pop-out in record time). I am shaking hands enthusiastically with all the other members - @Ranjan Pattanaik (great handling of the Discovery), @Gregory and @Warren Flay (the very determined Pajero crew) @ARAGON (great debut at Newbie), @Pmaraziti (my Italian partner in crime) @Russ (managing the big truck with good finesse, and not just power) @JeromeFJ and @Chris Wing (perfecting their mastery of the FJ) @Roger K (nice job at the back, with not an easy car to deal with) @WaYan and @TT_Dubai (kudos for navigating with determination the churned sand at the back of the convoy). In the end the drive took us 51.5 Km from our starting point, in 4:21 hours (of which 2:18 moving, which is the testament that we stopped many times, and persevered), at an average speed of 12 Km/h (but a brisk 22 km/h while moving). Well done everyone @Goutam, I appreciate your quick response at SL and setting the track for the rest of the convoy. @Islam Soliman @Jeandre Bezuidenhout handled the recoveries effortlessly. Thank you🙏 We were also able to utilize the additional support available. Thanks, @Shehab Alawadhi and his mighty F150, for towing Ahab’s FJ. @Ahab Shamaa's Winch came in handy (to pull himself out though😂). I hope your vehicle gets a speedy recovery. Only at the end of the drive, I came to know that @Watteau also had a rear winch. We shall put it into use soon😃 Things to watch out while night driving. Make sure that you have a visual of the car in front of you at all times. We had seen vehicles flying over dune yesterday. If, at any point, you are not able to see how the car ahead of you crossed a dune, do not feel shy in stopping and asking for support. See you all soon for more night drives. Cheers!

Trip Report: Glad to catch up with a great bunch of newbie drivers who signed up on this Carnity night drive at Margham. We drove along from Lisaili to Margham village through some technical areas , small to medium dunes and some sharp drops. Having the support of @Jeepie and @Wrangeld made the whole drive well supported and anchored all throughout. @Soumya Saklani did 2nd lead role to perfection in his prado , except some minor refusals and stucks. Rerouting as advised by me in some tricky areas , thank you. @Darren Brooke drove the LWB Tahoe really well. I was expecting some stucks /refusals considering the LWB but really impressive how well you drove. You almost got out of a soft patch with shovelings and some maneuvering which was a delight to see. Very immersive driving considering you made it all through with just one assistance. @Ahmed Mostafa did well in his LWB pajero, some refusals and stucks as expected . His second drive of the day and great to see your enthusiasm along with Trekkado, and Morshedi. @SyedObaidmissed out on this drive, no confirmation of joining after he was added to the drive upon him wait listing. @Lakshmi Narasimhan managed his position and his LWB Pajero with some refusals. Driving in dark takes some practice but it was good to see you managed most of the terrain with no issues than the last time we drove in daylight. Good to see you sticking to Newbie drives to learn and get better before jumping onto higher level to get the learning right. We did see some animals , but as we drive through they obviously hide away in the dark. @GauravSoniwas our center forward for the night and he managed all the recoveries/tugs under the watchful eyes of the seniors on this drive. You need to communicate clearly on the radio (which you did for most of the time) and wait for the acknowledgements from the car having a situation. How your are improving at it each drive is impressive. Thanks for your support my friend. @Niekku driving her FJC was totally blank on the radio, goes to show how well you were in the back of convoy which consisted of many having done their masterclasses (with @Ale Vallecchi). I was sure of your basics being right and hence your position, and you managed well. Great driving and enthusiasm. @stavros papachristos some refusals which are all part of the game especially at the back, managed his red wrangler well. Good to get your feedback asking for drives on Saturday which I/we will definitely try to arrange considering the availability of many leads who tend to have a working day on Saturdays. But nevertheless , will arrange. @Pierre de Maigret good to catch up after a gap, and your style of driving with a FJC is "kind of " impossible to get stuck/ have a refusal. Another member who was radio blank - great driving . Fantastic to see how you are applying all that you learnt in the masterclasses (with me). @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil another member who had a masterclass (with @Wrangeld) , drove his wrangler well. Some minor refusals which are always expected being at the back end of a longish convoy. Always great to see your smile and enthusiasm on all the drives you have been with me. @Jeepie was the sweep , and always reassuring we don't leave anyone behind. Her calm and clear approach with right communication is always a delight to have on any drive. Thank you so much for supporting the drive along with Richard. @Wrangeld was our Fly sweep meaning he was flying to any position where there might be need for an assistance or get into a position where we might need some re routing. Having mentored me from my early days in this club ( along with Marjan @Jeepie) , it was a nice little challenge for me leading a newbie group while he was on the drive. For sure his mastery over technical dunes is great. All the guidance's/advises learnt from you both were applied and hence we drove for most of the time even if it was with newbie drivers in the dark. Thank you! Thank you @Tbone for a superb day and for the route and terrain, though I was a bit late I am happy that I didn't miss the fun of this event. Thank you @Janarthan for a well played sweep role. @Gaurav Soni, thanks a lot for a very well executed 2nd lead, you made it much easier for me and @Thomas Varghese to manuver in some places. ( I believe so Thomas bhai). @Thomas Varghese did very well with his X even though he had some over heating issues with the car. I don't have nothing much to comment about @Ilya Golubinsky@Francois Germishuys as you guys were behind me, but saw doing really great at the climbs with their beasts😀👍👍. What a team, we were struck be adversity and its was handled with military precision, great skills and perfect execution @Kailas @Islam Soliman @Jeandre Bezuidenhout and to add @Shehab Alawadhi for his excellent execution of a difficult tow, it’s a great area to explore at night and lots of lessons in there, really enjoyed it, thanks again guys. Did anyone else get stopped at last exit?

Thank you Chaitanya for last night drive and for having included me. It was my first night drive, an experience to remember. Although technically challenging for a newbie, it went overall very smoothly thanks to your precise and continuous guidance. It made me réalise how much I learned with you during our masterclass. Thanks also to Richard, Marian and Gaurav for your support. Definitely a great team!

@Ale Vallecchi thanks for the detailed feedback. When we reflect back on what happened every one will realize that at times we need that push to break the barrier and get out of comfort zone and focus back on the drive to negotiate and cross the challenge safely, which was achieved. Hope in future drives we recall your screaming push push, keep moving, gently left right while climbing and it helps in polishing our handling skills.

My first experience in the night driving, and it was as fun as I expected it to be. Thank you very much @Kailas for the drive and letting me be the 2nd lead. thanks to @Islam Soliman for all the hard work you put in the very drive I have the privilege to drive with you. Shoutout to @Jeandre Bezuidenhout. @Ahab Shamaa will we miss you the Saturday afternoon? Hope it gets sorted soon, and thanks to @Shehab Alawadhi for the last big tug that was so needed. DRIVE REPORT Dear Desert Wanderers, Although well known to most, the drive to Pink rock to Big Red is always one that I love and yesterday's one made no exception. We started with 20 mins of delay, mostly because of some confusion on the meeting point, as everyone except myself and Marks stopped at an earlier point, which they had used in previous occasions. We then hit the sand, heading north-east with the sun rising from our right side. I personally love driving towards the sun in the morning: it's like being energized for the day. The first 30 mins were about knowing the convoy and testing their capabilities. We drove smoothly across some mid sized dunes, with a few steep descents, some side slopes, some ridge riding and some occasional criss crossing. Everyone did well, which allowed me to let @marks take his partial lead stint, with the aim of taking us to Pink Rock and start heading towards Big Red. @marks led us with good pace and nice lines to the bottom of Pink Rock, from where we climbed to the top to enjoy the beautiful view. As @Werno's passenger rightly said, you onky realise the reason for the name, Pink Rock, when you make it to the top and actually see the rock is.. pink! As @marks moved ahead, we started heading south towards Big Red. This portion of desert between Pink Rock and Big Red is one of my favourites, as it offers nice, long and flat ridges to ride on but also a lot of steep slop faces which allow to increase the level of the drive as desired. We indulged for quite some time in this area, where, unavoidably, we experienced a bit more challengesa and refusals/stucks, among which I can recall a couple of crested cars, @Hennie Schoeman's and @Batuhan Kulac's if I am not mistaken. After approx 1h20' I took over the lead again. As the convoy was doing too well, I decided to bump the level up a bit, both in pace and in technical difficulty. This led to a few more refusals and repeated attempts in a few complex passages, but in general the convoy responded very well. I have no hesitation to say that the last hour was a full Fewbie Plus drive. We quickly headed south to reach "The other big dune next to Big Red", where the whole convoy made it to the top at the 1st attempt. @imranaasghar81, in his role as Center Forward, was very worried about his pace and kept on asking if the G63 behind him was fine with it. A great deal of attention and care, however the guys behind did all very well. We then approached the final climb to Big Red. This was a tricky and difficult ascent, with very churned up sand and a lot of tracks added on top of the intrinsic complexity of the dune, which we approached from the northwest side. The fist attempt didn't go very well and we had to spend a little time winching @Hennie Schoemanout of a cresting just in front of a nasty little pocket first and then to help out @jodha singh shekhawatand @Batuhan Kulac out of a deep bowl. Both did extremely well and got out of the bowl in no time. After a brief rerouting, we reconnected with the rest of the convoy and restarted our ascent to the very top. We couldn't possibly let this moment go down in memories without a photo, so here it isb a proud Febwie convoy at the very top of Big Red: a fantastic achievement. After this last shot of adrenaline, we quickly headed out on E44 Hatta Road by 10am, as planned, to relax and reinflate. We covered 59.8km in 3h43', of which 3h 03' in movement and just 40' stopped, with an average moving speed of 19km/h, with a total ascent / descent of +/- 440m. Excellent stats for a Fewbie Drive: kudos to the whole convoy! Last but not least: congrats to @marks@marks. You led with confidence and with very good pace and lines. You are definitely ready to lead independently, I look forward to supporting you drives.

As it was my first time night drive I did have a bit of apprehension at first. But then I thought "@Chaitanya D knows what he's doing, I trust him" and when I saw @Wrangeld and @Jeepie as supports I was totally reassured to join this drive 😄 Interesting to see the dunes at night, feel the fresh desert breeze and always new learnings. Though it had been bit unfortunate for @Hardik Mody and @Ahab Shamaa but safety first. Enjoyed the recoveries. Kudos to the crew for excellent management. See you again.

@Luca Palanca Falsini really appreciate the thought and effort you put into the route for this drive (considering the beautiful trucks that dominated the convoy). It paid off incredibly well with zero stucks in the trickiest of starts and ending with a drive with more self recoveries than assisted!! was a pleasure to play my first time CF /Sweep and owe it to such a great convoy to make it a gentle learning for me! One rope, one winch, one shovel! I have nothing more to add to your great summary/guidance for each on the convoy. One tip @Watteau and I both learnt from Richard ( @Wrangeld) that we can share with @Dodi Syahdar @amir amiri is that rarely on these drives will you ever need to move above 3k rpm. When we both took that lesson on board, it changed our approach to building momentum and tackling these drives! Try being conscious of this and see if it can help prevent the urge/need to hit the gas so hard at times! @amir amiri also when at the garage next ask them to check if the shocks at the rear have faded. During some climbs I noticed a lot of bouncing which is often a sign... and am so impressed you got through so many technical areas with such soft/bouncy rear (I am not at all skilled as a mechanic ... I just watch a lot of YouTube 🤦🏽‍♂️ So a true experts opinion will help). @Arman I really appreciated you warning me throughout of the upcoming bumps and steps ... super drive and superb support to the convoy (especially me). kudos @Ranjan Das for a flawless SL! I wish one day to have a car as kitted out as yours @Watteau ... a no compromise setup!! Was nice to pay it forward knowing how much help you provide on every drive to others! see you all again soon on the dunes

We had 3 hour of drive and we covered 40 km full of challenges both technical and high dunes with super long ridge ridings in that new environment. @Niki Patel I wanna thank you first for the exceptional work on the back. I was impressed by your feedback and your attitude. Very Well done! @Ranjan Das: you did a great job as Second Lead, I had to reroute sometime and you were always on track. Just wanna suggest you, for the future, to be a bit more vocal. @amir amiri: Hope that you fixed your small tire issue. Your driving skill is very good, just wanna ask you to be a bit more gentle with the gas, your beast is very capable and hard to keep calm :). @Dodi Syahdar: Hope that you enjoyed the drive. I know that high dunes are more fun than technical areas but, especially with long tracks, it is quite important to master this type of terrain. As suggested to @amir amiri, I would like to recommend you to be a bit more gentle with the gas :). @Watteau: I am impressed by your driving skills (and now by your toolbox ). Having a pop out is a quite common experience, hope you learned how easy it is to fix it :). @Arman: being on the back of the convoy needs the ability to deal with a lot of additional challenges, manage the right distance, messy terrain are few. Yesterday was not an easy task for you and your jeep, after all our beasts. You dealt with that easily. Bravo! Thank you again to everybody for your enthusiasm! Dear Desertnauts. This drive caters to those who wish to search for "No Man's Lands", that is new and possibly unspoiled areas of Dubai, where off-roading may still seem like a true exploration, and the route is still as little planned as possible, and based on the curiosity to check this or that feature appearing on the horizon. There are advantages to driving on a weekday: the feeling of freedom from our weekly businesses and worries, and the luxury of venturing into virtually virgin terrain, where the few tracks that may have been carved during the weekend have been swept clean by the strong winds that blow from the sabkhas surrounding this particular area. We have established a Fewbie Plus level for this drive, due not so much to the driving skills required (they will be the same as those possessed by Fewbies), but because of the quality of the sand on this area, often soft and treacherous, as well as the presence of unexpected tight bowls, closing the way out of what may have appeared as a nice and easy set of long range dunes. This means that the drive will require just more experienced drivers, who may be used to self-recovering, or to a slightly faster pace, and quick maneuvers. The zenith (farthest point) of the drive will be the fence indicating the border with Abu Dhabi, and the nearby watering and feeding station for oryx, where, usually, tens of these lovely bovines can be seen roaming around. The final goal will be to exit at Solar Park, after returning from No Man's Land, through another "mysterious" stretch of Dubai's desert - The Middle Earth. @Chaitanya D, @Wrangeld, @Gaurav Soni, @Jeepie, @Soumya Saklanigreat leadership, managed entire drive well, safe and enjoyable with right amount of challenges and technical areas. For most of us this drive could be the 1st night drive or even first newbie drive, which should be a memorable one. With few refusals, self recoveries, pulling out, lot of learning for most of us. Driving in the dark looked scary, with proper guidance it turned out to be so easy and enjoyable. Never had chance to see the dune in the night, but today it became reality, only thing couldn’t see any animals on the way. Thank every one for this drive and see you soon in the sand!!!! @Chaitanya Di guess probably sday you choose relatively less challenging route without much soft patches on the way considering 1st night drive for most of us. I realized the advises by @Wrangeld, by you and many others to back up my thoughts to go back to lower level drives to learn the basics right helped me a lot. Just to mention that my last 5 drives went smooth with 0 refusals. I am happy that I got much needed advises on right time and my learning applying that reflects on my drive. Hope much more advises/learning in store for me.

Thank you @Ale Vallecchifor yet another wonderful and energetic drive, where you taught us about all possible tricks and tips which this terrain could offer and special thanks for trusting me as your sweep😀.Thank you @Mehmet Volgafor a perfectly executed CF and for all the advices and helps in assisting in recoveries. @Lakshmi Narasimhandid really good as the second lead ,👍 keep it up buddy. @Ranjan Pattanaikdid manage his explorer very well , @Gregory @ARAGONand @Pmarazitidid really good at the front ( it was not an easy task in such soft sand) @Warren Flayit was nice to see you in ur SWB pajero and did the self recovery very well. Dear @Hasan Wahlan, thank you for registering for this weekday drive. However, the drive is reserved for Fewbie Plus members, that is any Fewbie with 5 or more drives, at Fewbie level (not overall). Thank you everybody for showing up for the drive and arriving early at the meet up point. Today, we had a short convoy and we ensured we made most of it. To start before even getting into the dunes, we assisted the Mitsubishi Outlander who was stuck on the dirt track. At the beginning, we started slowly to see the response of the convoy and gradually the pace was increased and the convoy was coping successfully. Since, the response of the convoy was good, we also tried some technical areas. I am glad to see @William Fernandes showing interest in learning and the improvement was obvious during the drive itself. @Thomas Varghese got the opportunity to learn to do recoveries and also to use your rope. I am very grateful to Marjan @Jeepie for firstly giving me the opportunity to lead and it was a great experience for me. And secondly for your valuable guidance, support and feedback provided to me through out. Please find some statistics below about the drive.

DRIVE REPORT Attendees @Desert Wrangler @aaron kamall @Ahmed Mostafa @Trent @Anish Varghese @Nafly Azhar @Ahmed Mostafa and @Nafly Azhar , both with the Pajeros, did very well on their first drive. These cars are great offroad vehicles, but a bit more difficult to learn the art of offroading compared with a Jeep Wrangler for example. Talking about Jeep Wranglers, @aaron kamall, @Desert Wrangler, @Anish Varghese brought theirs, and drove very well throughout the drive. And talking about tricky, @Trent brought a dune ship in the form of the mighty F150 but perfect throttle control and impressive skills, and a very capable co-pilot did the trick! Big thanks to @sertac for the help today. One of the members brought a Walkie Talkie that we tried to program, i think it was this one: Looks like you have to hold the MENU button and then turn on the unit to put it in Frequency mode. Moving forward you all will be joining the Newbie drives and not an Absolute Newbie drive. Drives are announced every Sunday at 11 am, and they go live on Sunday at 7:10 pm. Due to the high demand, these drives get full in about 10 minutes, so please be online at 7 pm to book your spot. If you miss a spot, put your name on the waitlist asap. Generally, by Thursday with dropouts everyone does get a spot if they have waitlisted. For the next drives, please bring along a deflator, pressure gauge, flag and radio as a minimum.
