@PaoloMaraziti, I and @Emmanuel are also running on normal tarmac tires. I tried once to change with AT tires and went back to highway Michelin tires the following week. My reasons? Atrocious road consumption, and most of all lack of "floating" ability on sand (all that thread was getting too much grip for the way I had become accustomed to driving). My opinion is that on sand you don't need any special tires (which you'd definitely need on rocks or very mixed terrain). This is my choice while in the UAE; if I were to make a choice for most other desert areas, I would reconsider, as sand is only present in 12% of the world's deserts, which are actually mostly made of gravel, rocks and mountains, where traction prevails over floating, and risks of punctures and tears are too high.

Lots of thanks to everyone for replying, I'll follow the advice of keeping HT, at least until I've done a few drives. I've found a car I like, but I won't say much because I could jinx it. It's a tiring process buying a 2nd hand car here.

Perfect advice from @PaoloMaraziti when you look at the cars, the stock tires are Dunlop Grandtrek AT22 - these are highway tires and not Offroad even though they carry the AT label. So don’t be put off if you see these on the car (or if the seller attempts to claim these are All Terrain tires). Don’t change to genuine AT until you have driven a few times with stock tires - the leads when setting the convoy order do also consider your tires and position you to compensate. @Wrangeld @Ale Vallecchi and @Emmanuel (edited ) are the infamous Marshals going everywhere in highway treads!! Showcasing skill/experience/control over mods is real!

Dear @Lorenzo Candelpergheryour essay reports are as interesting as your drives , through out your the drive my mind was playing the knight rider theme song were I could see David Hasselhoff (Italian version ) but this time in Jeep not a Pontiac firebird trans Am ……when I First saw the drive list with my name as 2nd lead my jaw dropped 😱and couldn’t sleep 😴 constantly thinking of how to catch up an American jeep with a Italian expert behind the wheel especially with pajero 😰….. but thanks to your warm up drive from the start that gave me the boost in confidence to drive behind you! After a few wobbly drives through the bushes I got to see the hidden gems of dunes and really enjoyed every turn in the dunes behind your jeep with that high pace….. special thanks to rest of the convoy who made this drive possible with thrills ……. Thank you @Wrangeld for an Epic experience. It was my second drive with Carnity and I loved the challenge. It definitely felt like an anti climax in the start with the key issue and the initial stuck but @Alex Raptor saved the day and made me jealous of his fancy equipment. 😀 @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil Great to know you and your experiences. Hope to catch you on some other drives! Thanks to everyone else on the drive and being 3rd in Convoy means less interactions with those behind and being able grab those few moments to chat during stucks.

Hi @JonaI'm driving with great pleasure an FJ with the stock tires (Dunlop Grandtrek AT22), considered HT as per @Niki. Honestly, it was only in very very few occasions, that I was missing something because of the tires. I would totally concur with @Ale Vallecchi , @Niki, @PaoloMaraziti, keep HT or stock AT tires, and enjoy the FJ world !!

The same with me @Jona, as @PaoloMaraziti mentioned, I used to have the BFG, then changed to the cooper AT3, which is totally different and much better option. Of course the advise of the masters is still valid and to consider. Any way, welcome to FJC lovers group 👏🏼

Thank you @Wrangeld that was a very nice drive. Very eventful from the start... proof that anything can happen in the desert. The terrain of Lehbab is beautiful and challenging, and the convoy did pretty well all along. Great support from @Alex Raptor and @Jeepie as always ! Sometimes people ask me why I still go to Fewbie drives... Going to Fewbie drives is a reminder of the importance of being prepared and concentrated. It is also a reminder of the steps that you need to cross and the learnings you had all the way. Gravity and momentum, reading the dunes and the sand, knowing your car, testing your capabilities... Going to Fewbie drives is also a reminder that in the desert you need to be humble and patient. Everybody gets stuck, no matter your level. But with the advice of the Carnity crew you learn to handle all different situations. It is also the chance to meet new people, and lend a hand whenever it is needed, because that is the spirit of this community. Well done evreyone, have a good week and hope to see you all very soon in the sand !

A bit late to the party here, went straight off to a lovely weekend away. Great drive with some challenges to overcome, tricky winching manoeuvre, but I love all these challenges. Special mention to @eldose baby for a fantastic self recovery on a super soft top, just shows you that the slightest of traction can be maximised to turn into full motion, a lesson for seniors and juniors alike. Pleasure driving with you all and look forward to the next one.

Thanks for the feedback @Larry Cadden - I did warn in advance that beautiful though this area is, it's challenging. Funnily enough, it's probably easier if you drive in a Fewbie or Fewbie Plus around here, because it's easier to navigate this type of soft dune a little more easily when the terminal speed is higher. For me, however, the best accolade I think I can have is that you felt it was a good learning experience. We all enjoy flowing non stop drives, but once in a while a 'challenge' drive like this can really help for what is to come in the future.

Hi @Enrico Biscarofor your first Fewbie drive I you did really well. 😃 I had a good view of you in my mirrors and even in the tricky areas you tackled them well! You communication on the radio is excellent. I mentioned at one of the drive breaks and your post drive report just reinforces that 👍. You have all the correct enhancements on your Pajero to take this hobby to the next level and looking forward to more drives! Hope the cooling issue is an easy fix and there are plenty of Pajero owners here who can offer ideas if needed. @Niki@Abdul Rafay-Slovely post drive reports! Thanks!

Post Drive Report A delayed and then delayed a bit more start meant we suffered from even softer sand than usual in an area reknowned for soft sand. This was not an easy newbie drive, but then I preadvised that it would be a challenge - and it was. This was a technical drive. The dunes are not large, but do require finesse and care. The technical dunes are not that short or challenging, but they are very very soft. There are not a lot of play areas, requiring everyone to remain at the top of their game throughout the drive. In my view we did not have a high number of refusals or stucks taking the terrain into account, the length of the convoy and the fact that concentration was already impacted by the delayed (twice) start. The newer the newbie today, the more impressive your performance - truly. We did not have any criss crossing, or ridge riding, or any real slide sloping. What we had was large sections of the drive where everyone had to focus on following a complicated route, cross a lot of dunes straight over and rise to the challenge of driving along the top of the dunes. @Alex Raptor you pretty much saved the day. Popouts handled in record time, and epic winch manouvre, sorting out all the refusals along the way. Your baptism of fire on your deserved promotion. @Jeepie wonderful to have you back in the sand, calmly sorting out everyone at the back of the convoy. @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil perfect 2nd lead. Avoided all the pit and pratfalls that I might have made. @Ramandbx sorry you got locked out buddy. @Senthil Kumar hope the grinding noise gets sorted. Some absolute massive additional kudos points to mention: Perfect convoy discipline and great radio usage today. Thanks everyone. It makes it so much easier when everyone complies. Good team work. Thanks for supporting where needed. There is a fewbie drive in this area tomorrow. That says all the newbies need to know about the standard today. We don't normally take newbies here. Finally, the time has come to freely explore, enjoy and chart out Abu Dhabi's massive red sand dunes, a dream world for any off-roader to enjoy the big rolling dunes without any cross-tracks. A place to really test your vehicle limits and actual potential on virgin sand to better understand what your vehicle is really capable of in the massive dunes, bowls, and long side sloping. We plan to enter from Pac-Man (Alien crop circle, lol) side and enjoy the dunes with a view of a lush green agro farm in the middle of the desert. Amazing place to witness how agriculture has developed in the UAE, despite harsh and barren soil. Then we plan to head into bigger dunes with massive side sloping opportunities on two amazing long-range dunes patches heading towards Al Ain Farms. PS1: We plan to exit by 9:30 - 10:00, but in such dunes and crossing we might have an unexpected delay or difficulty as I'm exploring this area for the first time since 2018. So please raise your tolerance and factor in extra time for some delay. PS2: Get ready for some serious fun, much more than a regular NB/FB drive in Dubai/Shj. As there is no longer PCR/DPI test required for entering Abu Dhabi, so looking forward to see more Dubai and Sharjah members to join too. I went to Sweihan few week back with NB and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty and massive scale of AD dunes. So this time it's FB, mean lot more fun is expected.

Many Pajeros are a bit sensitive on the transmission cooler side. Especially the models 2018 till now they seem to have more issues, OR they let the oil cooler temperature warning appear earlier in comparison with the older models (Vanessa's 2008 model never has this issue). Most popular solution is to add an external cooling fan and mount it in front of the transmission cooler. On the other hand you have the cooler season now coming the next coming weeks so if i were you i would wait a couple more drives to see if this issue persists or not. @Anish S and many other are happy with the extra cooling fan and seems to solve the issue. I wrote a topic on this a while back:

Enjoyable drive with beautiful terrain, Thanks @Frederic for taking us today. the only imperfections are the amount of trash humans left behand and the amount of tracks. Would be interesting to have a fewbie drive in Faya, driving on the rim of the bowls while climbing up.😛

First and Foremost I would like to thank @@Janarthan for taking us to a fantastic place, @Foxtrot Oscar for her heartily laugh in any situation and @Nikifor generously spraying my transmission radiator when my tenperature was high. This was my first newbie drive and what a blast. I loved the more sustained pace and the extra challenge, which I am happy the car was able to handle. As for the driver I learned 1. You MUST be concentrated at all time. The 3 refusal I had came 2 in a moment when I was chatting with my wife. The third one shortly after we all congratulated ourselves for the ride before climbing the last hill. Lesson learn no more. 2. Keep your distance. While I believe I did well there I had one refusal when the car in front of me had a bit of difficulties ridging and I did not notice (distraction) so I had to stop in a spot where I could not go forward anymore. 3. I still need to tune in the momentum and acceleration when coming off ridges on the soft side. I had it right most of the time. I noticed that it is better when, instead of lifting completely the gas when momentum is sufficient you keep some throttle. This requires less initial momentum and to fine tune your feet. I have it in my brain now, I assume practice will melas me improve this sensitivity. 4. My transmission temperature acted up. Thanks all for the patience. This is the first time it happens. I am gonna have my car checked. 5. Climbing. I might be light, but my gear acts up when climbing in a way I have not figure out yet so I often change gear when I do not want to whether in full auto or tiptronic. I guess I will need to climb more. What I am happy to see, and my wife too, is that I never fought gravity and I manage to steer down before I feel the momentum is gone allowing me to safely point my front wheel down before is too late. 6. I am particularly happy with my instinct in one refusal where I could not ridge, right so I went left following gravity instead of fighting it. In all I self recovered in alll occasion. I am happy about the small MOD I made. I can see the lift and the tire make a difference in the newbie drives. One last word about tire pressure. I start my drives at 11, I finish above 12. Should I start at 10 (without having a pop up) as I decently noticed I tend to have more refusal toward the last third of the drives. FJC is a good choice you made for offroading as in stock form they are absolutely amazing. Just make sure you buy FJC with road HT tires than AT to be sure that it was a mall crawler and not extensively offroad driven or abused. For offroading lighter AT tires are must have, but you can still manage newbie to fewbie level drive with HT tires.
