2021 Season Finale Trip Report Probably one of the best drives I have been a part of this entire year. We had a fantastic group of drivers and coupled with some awesome terrian it was a recipe for some nice heart pumping fun. Due to the new AD entry regulations a drive which had initially 13 drive participants on Sunday was reduced to just 6 come Friday morning. However, with a shorter convoy comes more fun and thats what we had. The bowls and pyramid shaped dunes near the Bu Tais tree area was our first point of attack. The heights, the pace and criss crossing that we had done in that stretch were truly spectacular and something that I have been wanting to do for a pretty long time. As we moved East towards E95, we encountered a stretch of big dunes that had a lot of uneven surfaces and bushes. While it didn't provide a smooth ride but the pace and the criss crossings continued. Closer to the final stretch of dunes we encountered a smoother terrain and bigger sized pyramids and bowls. The sand was powder soft, but the group was relentless as we kept scaling higher and crossing some pretty sharp ridges at high speeds. As we had to exit out from the starting point, we started driving through the flat dunes closer to the sabkhas. The pace set of just above 100 km/h through the winding flat dunes was just the perfect end to what has been a fantastic day and year. I wish to thank all the drive partipants @Ranjan Das, @Mus_hus78 @Ilya @Mario Cornejo for bringing out their best on a terrain that was demanding. And ofcourse a special mention to @Asif Hussain for providing the support to the drive. It's always a pleasure to drive with you Sirji. What a way to send off 2021! Thank you @Srikumar for hosting a fantastic day at Bu Tais, it is a terrific playground. It was 8:00 pm last night when I arrived, as it was my first time there I had no clue where to camp so just went and settled not far from the meeting point. I must say it was difficult going to sleep because the sky was spectacular, but as the mercury dropped I made way to get warm and rest. The convoy gathered at the designated site where everyone prepared their cars and, after listening to @Srikumar's briefing, we all started heading towards the playground. We were greeted by the last dawn of 2021. After a warm up and driving for about an hour and a half @Srikumar took us to the emblematic site known as Bu Tais Tree Dune. The scenery was not short of tall dunes, bowls, every now and then we would see tempting areas where to play. From the "menu" of drives I took with @Carnity during 2021, this was the last course and I am delighted the "dessert" was a new place, with scenic landscapes and a variety of areas for playing. It was also a pleasure to meet @Asif Hussain who is a master at riding those big bowls! @Srikumar, @Ranjan Das, @Mus_hus78, @Ilya, and @Asif Hussain it was an absolute pleasure to drive with you today, I wish you, yours and @Carnity a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2022. Hope to drive soon with all of you!

To the waitlist guys: apologies, we gave preference to those for whom this was the first drive of the weekend. It's been raining - so conditions should be fantastic for a challenging drive with lots of excitement. As new restrictions have been re-imposed on getting into Abu Dhabi, we will make sure to keep well away from the border line in case there are drivers without a green Al Hosn. This means a slightly different route than I originally planned - but it will still be fun. The entry road is before the Faqa police station (which is the border), so please be careful on your route into the dunes. See you soon in the sand.

Fredy advise is a money saver indeed, but you should never forget that HT tires have a limited role to play while off-roading. You can't deflate lower than 14 PSI You can't self recover like others running on AT tires You can't compare the performance of HT with AT tire - Huge difference. However, as you just starting so you can continue with newbie drives with HT tires, but try to switch to AT as soon as you can if you really wanna enjoy and learn "safer" off-roading. Many have pushed this bar too far to prove a point or two to others or to themselves, but it invites unnecessary risk of damaging car transmission and engine, fighting gravity stupidly - sliding all the way to the point of flip or roll over, getting stuck often as you can't deflate below 13-14 PSI, frequent pop-outs, zero self recovery possibility on simplest of a stuck. Tires are the first contact between sand and your vehicle, and that should be the first ever upgrade or mod anyone should consider for sand off-roading after buying the shovel.

Welcome to the club @Eduardo sos ! I would definitely advise you to keep your tyres as long as they are still fine. We have plenty of members that drive even high level drives with standard tyres.

Dear Desertnauts. HAPPY 2022!! May this new year be prosperous and peaceful. In preparation for tomorrow's drive, as informed on the first post, we'll make a full revolution around Solar Park, following a clockwise rotation. Differently from the first time this itinerary was completed, we'll start from the closest point to Solar Park (our "perihelion"), to attempt what initially will be a shorter, more direct path toward Faqa (compared to the first time), this time through a more technical area. Once completed the segment through Faqa, we'll proceed in a south-westerly direction, and based on how much time we have left, we will decide if we'll continue in the direction of Ganthoot, which would be our farthest point from Solar Park (our orbit's "aphelion"). Whenever possible (on sabkhas and long range dune, we'll drive straight and fast, while on the technical dunes we'll have to sacrifice speed to follow their curvy lines, and ride in and out of small bowls. We are hoping that the wet sand factor will not be too much of a hinderance, considering it may contribute to churning the tracks a bit more than the usual. The convoy numbering will be the following: @Werno will be in Second Lead @Sunil Mathew will follow at #3 @Anoop Nair at #4 @Archibald Jurdi will take #5 @Ashok chaturvedi will be #6 @Zed in place #7, and @Rawad will close the convoy in the Sweep position. We will meet under the pylons along the tarmac road from Al Qudra to Solar Park, with the goal of starting as soon as possible. In the UAE, we have a myriad of terrains to choose from when it comes to desert driving. For many new members who might be asking themselves what the differences actually are, I wanted to compile the most known areas we drive in, and give some information about the area and what you can expect when you join a drive with us in that area. We will be focusing on the sand driving. Northern Emirates (UAQ and RAK) Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah have some very nice areas that we often explore, with plenty of vegetation, wildlife, and the mountains are never far away. On these drives, the emphasis is more on exploration than on the typical dune bashing. Scenic Score: 95% Excitement Score: 70% Versatility Score: 95% Fossil Rock - Faya - Sharjah From the moment you drive on the Sharjah - Kalba road, you'll see the majestic Fossil Rock mountain on the right hand side. It has got its name due to the ancient fossils that you can find on the rocks, and the surrounding red dunes are a delight to drive. Usually starting from Batayeh-Faya road, the dunes gradually go from small and bushy until you reach the nice open areas with "The Long Lady" as one of the most popular dunes to showcase and practice your sidesloping skills. The cherry on top is the climb on Fossil Rock itself which provides an amazing scenic view on the area and Mleiha town below. A must for every beginner level driver ! To even up the challenge you can take on the nice bowls behind Fossil Rock, or head out to Faya which is also called "The Saddle". Scenic Score: 90% Excitement Score: 70% Versatility Score: 90% Pink Rock - Big Red - Sharjah Nearby Fossil Rock, you will find Pink Rock, which got its name from the pinkish hue the rocks have. This very popular off-road area is known for the smooth gentle dunes at the start that gradually move to challenging bowls nearby the base of Pink Rock. Climbing Pink Rock is the ideal challenge for beginners and provides a fantastic view as well. From Pink Rock you can head out to Big Red which will up the challenge and entice every level of off-roader. The Big Red area is an off-roader hotspot during the season. Scenic Score: 80% Excitement Score: 70% Versatility Score: 75% Bidayer / Area 53 / Schuwaib - Sharjah This area is not for the faint of heart, and the big dunes will demand you to keep momentum at all times, while the massive hills such as Iftar Bowl and Super Bowl are ultimate play areas one can find in Sharjah. This area tends to be extremely busy during the offroad season. Scenic Score: 60% Excitement Score: 80% Versatility Score: 65% Margham / Lahbab - Dubai A little less known area, but very versatile with nice technical areas, playable bowls, and overall a terrain where any level offroader can practice and hone their skills without encountering too many cross tracks. Scenic Score: 70% Excitement Score: 70% Versatility Score: 75% Murquab - Lisaili - Faqa - Dubai This area is located on the Dubai-Al Ain road and offers so much. From technical terrain, to the arboretum in Faqa, long range dunes in both Faqa and some areas of Lisaili, and the most amazing creamy dunes below the Maktoum Solar Park which we have now called "Little Sweihan". This area never disappoints and there is a reason we have it on our weekly drives schedules ! Scenic Score: 85% Excitement Score: 80% Versatility Score: 95% Al Qudra - Dubai Al Qudra has become one of the most well known Offroad areas in Dubai, mainly due to the close vicinity to the city, but also because of its versatility, nearby facilities (Last Exit, Love Lakes), and the wildlife than can be spotted while off-roading (gazelles, oryx). This area stretches out to Murquab in the East via Al Hathmah area, on to Faqa going South below the Solar Park, and up to the Bab al Shams resort in the West. Scenic Score: 85% Excitement Score: 75% Versatility Score: 95% Sweihan - Abu Dhabi / Al Ain The Sweihan area in Abu Dhabi has to be experienced, and the proximity to Dubai brings lots of Dubai residents to Sweihan to explore the massive long range dunes and versatile area that has something in store for every off-roader. Sweihan never disappoints and the Nagrah area which alternates between monstrous dunes and deserted sabkhas will leave you hungry for more every single time. Scenic Score: 80% Excitement Score: 90% Versatility Score: 95% Al Khatim - Abu Dhabi A very popular and versatile offroader destination for Abu Dhabi residents with exhilarating dunes and technical areas that will challenge any offroader. Scenic Score: 80% Excitement Score: 90% Versatility Score: 80% Wagan / Umm Al Oash / Bu Tais - Abu Dhabi / Al Ain In search for monstruous dunes where momentum and pace are critical and where your vehicle will be pushed to its limit ? You have come to the right place as this area is spoiled with massive dunes, alternated by long flat sabkhas where you can get your bearings back before heading in again, and again ! Scenic Score: 95% Excitement Score: 100% Versatility Score: 80% Liwa Madinat Zayed - Abu Dhabi The Madinat Zayed area is famous for its Yellow Water Truck, which was left behind many years back, but no-one really knows how it got there. This area is consisting of massive dunes, and you can easily scale the level up or down in this area based on the convoy you bring there. From this place onwards and further down south into Liwa Crescent you will feel like you are on a different planet. Scenic Score: 90% Excitement Score: 100% Versatility Score: 90% Liwa Crescent - Abu Dhabi Seeing LIWA for the first time will leave you astonished, baffled, and beyond comprehension. From Himeem in the East, to Khanoor in the West, this whole area is filled with some of the biggest dunes on this planet, massive slipfaces that will make you shiver when descending, and extremely technical dunes that will require your utmost focus. This area is unforgettable and every off-roader should have this on his bucket list ! Scenic Score: 100% Excitement Score: 100% Versatility Score: 100%

Hello lovely people and happy 2022! Ive just bought a Toyota FJ and Im ready for my second offroad dunes session - I am a real beginner. My car came to me with Bridgestone dueler H/T tyres and Ive seen it is a pretty standard model. Tread looks fine. question is: Ive spent money on the car, now buying compressor and all small bites and pieces and feeling lazy to also spend on tyres. would these tyres give me grip for the joy of a beginner in dunes? Or should I open my wallet again as the tyres wont perfom? TIA

A great drive to end the year! Thanks to @Ale Vallecchi for leading an awesome drive and to @Russ for his recoveries. And of course to @Nathan for taking the centre role and relaying communications and his own advice to the rear end of a very long convoy! Some great technical dunes at the end of the drive, that were nicely churned up by the first 13 vehicles, leaving the Raptors of myself, @Karthik Raptorand @Russto plough through! You will need a green status, if you haven't, you will have to take a PCR test. They just changed the rules again to begin at the 31st of December. I just wanted to let you know now so you still have time to take the PCR test if necessary.
