Dear Desertnauts @Anoop Nair, @Thomas Varghese, @Wafi Ziadeh, @Rayas Ali, @Ali Shah, @Stan Hassett, @Ahmed Wagdy, @Nitin Mohan and @Murad Hamed in consideration of the quality of the convoy, with a lot of Fewbies and above, I would like to update the Mystery drive to a "Oryx to Oryx" drive. This will take us through an initial stint in Qudra, looking for oryx around Crescent Lake, all the way to the large (hopefully) Oryx herd that usually roams near E14 (Faqa Rd.) In the Ghantoot area. Here we'll find several date palm trees, and if time allows, this is where we'll take a break to enjoy tea or coffee. More updates to follow on Saturday. Have a nice week.

Great topic, I carry the basic kit easily available at all pharmacies and I added electrolyte sachets, burn aid treatment, antihistamine, skin sun protector. There is a UAE based business that sells off road products, among them a first aid molle pouch containing: 1 x Buckle Tourniquet (2.5 x 45cm) 1 x Emergency Blanket (130 x 210cm) 1 x Military Trauma Dressing (4inch) 1 x Pair of Nitrile Gloves 2 x Sterile Combine Dressings (10 x 20cm) 1 x Conforming Elastic Bandage (7.5 x 450cm) 1 x Disposable CPR Face Shield 1 x Pair of Shears (Scissors 18.5cm) 1 x Burn Dressing (40 x 60cm) 5 x Adhesive Band Aids (1.9 x 7.2 cm) An item I am curious about, that I don't see included in first aid kits, is the combat gauze or "hemostatic dressing", perhaps in this forum we could get some feedback or opinion about including it or not in a first aid kit. I added Celox granules to my order yesterday. Hemostatic products might not be included because they are a bit more expensive than the other standard items or that they are ideally stored at 25 degrees while general 1st aid kits are designed to be stored in uncontrolled environments?

I would like to do a survey of the most common injuries/medical emergencies that people have seen while offroading. I am going to assemble my own first aid kit because the off-the-shelf kits at pharmacies naturally can't have everything. For example, I imagine some of the more desert-specific incidents would be: 1. burns (from car parts and fluids, camp fires) 2. motion sickness 3. insect bites 4. snake bites 5. heat stroke/dehydration 6. general cuts/scrapes/splinters And black swan incidents to be prepared/trained in basic first aid for, such as: 1. shock 2. severe lacerations/crush/stab injuries 3. cardiac/breathing emergencies 4. concussion What injuries/issues do you regularly see/wish you'd been prepared for while offroading?

I was referring to the most stressful moment of the week, Monday 7:00 pm when the drives come open for registration on the website, and we go refresh, refresh, refresh, click !!! .... and most drives get full in less than 1 min !

Very good topic @Jessica Lambert ! @Melenany is a certified first aid instructor for the government. I will tag him in here as he might be able to chip in. I think you have covered it already really well. Accidents happen unfortunately and the better we are prepared, the better we can deal with them. In general if something serious happens, we are usually max 30mins away from the main roads on 90% of our drives we do (Liwa, Al Quoa, and other remote areas are more challenging). This means we can call the ambulance immediately and should be able to give a pinpoint location as to where the patient would need to be picked up. Within the Carnity club, we are lucky to have very capable members who are certified doctors in daily life, or people who have been trained in their profession to deal with such events. If i would have to rate the risk of occurence from my experiences i would say: 1) Burns (many cars overheat in the desert, or have cooling hoses or caps bursting off) 2) Dehydration. Is definitely something to look out for. 3) lacerations, crush, cuts, bruises, Not common but hence our training for recoveries and pop-out repair is essential. 4) motion sickness. Happens sometimes but with proper medication and exiting the drive this can be kept under control. 5) insect or snake bites. Not so common, and not deadly in UAE.

While I am still finalizing the route, would like to mention that due to temperatures crossing 40 deg. C by 9:00 AM, the starting time of the drive has been changed to 5:00 AM. As this means that you would be getting up at an unearthly hour, I will promise to do my best to ensure that your early morning rise was well worth it... 😜

Some of you have joined us before on these evenings and you probably know already what to expect from it. A few points: 1) We will meet up at the meeting point at 7PM Sharp, and deflate a bit (20-25psi is fine) and engage 4x4. Meeting point: https://goo.gl/maps/CRwuFW8i6ZLnSoKn7 2) By 7.15PM we will head a bit into the Faqa dunes area. There is a nice group of trees with a small abandoned farm house that we will use as our subject. It's about 10mins of offroading. 3) From there you can park the car, set up your tripods and start shooting away. 4) Most people will be leaving by 10 or 10.30 latest i assume, whoever wants to leave earlier can be escorted back to the road. Please don't wander off alone as this area is surrounded by very technical dunes. Whoever wants to camp please go ahead as well. In daylight its very easy to find your way back to the road. 5) This is NOT an Offroad drive event, but a gathering of photography enthusiasts/hobbyists/pro's/newbies to practice astrophotography. So please stick with the group and don't go off-roading alone at night in this area. Bring at least the following equipment: headlamp and/or flashlight, camping chair, DSLR Camera or Smartphone, tripod, film/memory cards, extra battery, Recommended Lens(es). A tripod is recommended for night photography with your DSLR. In the meantime, it would be good to hear from you if your are completely new to this and might need some help with the settings. Let us know which camera and lens you will bring. There will be definitely people around that have experience with the same type/brand of cameras so we can help each other out. I will be bringing Canon 5D Mk2 with: -Samyang 14mm f2.8 - Canon 35mm f2.0 See you all soon !
