Dear Desert Drivers, The long weekend is approaching, and the drive of tomorrow. Thank you for being courageous enough to start with an early wake-up call to spend 4 hours in a hot and dusty environment! We will have a very strong convoy tomorrow, and we will try to make the most of it. We will cross the area called Middle Earth. I don't know really where it comes from, but it suits well for this vast stretch of desert between Solar Park and Faqa. We will have 3 to 4 sets of dunes, separated (or connected) by sabkhas. Dunes will be mostly technical, with higher sand formations in the Little Sweihan area. The soft sand will require all your skills and concentration to maintain momentum. Extra caution will be needed on the ridges and during criss crossing, to keep the balance of your car and maintain a precise driving line. Be prepared to cover some distance as the sabkhas will easily credit additional km. @Ale Vallecchi it always a pleasure to drive under you... I certainly try not to miss any of our drives, these mid week are a blessings. I loved the terrain (unmarked weekday no tracks) near all the drive including the super and other bowls. The wind was howling and blowing sand most of the time but it pushed away the rain clouds, with us looking up the sky with sad eyes and hopes for the rain. @Ranjan Das gave us a great moment to smile when he reached the meeting point direct from office; with his creased shirt , trouser and polished executive shoes he looked as if he reached a luncheon than drive.... wonder how he forgot his secretary in the office. @munkybizness always love your presence and smiling face; where did you get the name?... have you typo error the O with U? The very small team but great speed and maneuverability coming from seasoned intermediate drivers... No stuck and very few refusals and re attempt to mention. The usual drive courtesy is to thank the Main lead, Second lead, CF and Sweep... since the last three cars where doing the same in rotation wondered how to thank them. Thanks Ale for the ending at Badayer shops were we could have my favorite ice cold fresh coconut juice plus the service of someone inflating the tires. The only disappointing regret I had that all the three drivers were flying off for work cum holidays ( cooler places), whereas I remain stuck dune bashing.

Every time I'm out on a drive with @Ale Vallecchi, the poet in me suddenly finds new wings. Perhaps, it's the way in which he wrings the orchestra to deliver this symphony across the sands. And on this particular afternoon, I spotted him on the highway, headlights ablaze and threading the lanes to the meeting point. We arrived, a few paces behind each other to find @Ashok chaturvedi and his yellow FJ already lighting up the meeting point. And soon behind followed @Ranjan Das ready for business. We purposed that if we ran into any trouble, we had a legal compadre dressed for the part to help tide us over. Sadly, that occasion never came about. What I got instead was the occasion to see how effortless he slugs his machine across the softest of sands. The desert is a disloyal mistress. With passing winds, she forgets the dalliances of drivers past, and welcomes new ones across her canvas. Seeing virtually virgin and untouched sands in the southern part of Sharjah was a sight to behold, and this welcome epiphany followed us all the way until we got to Badayer where groups of desert tours had plundered her love. Thank you, Ale, Ranjan and Ashok, for giving me such a memorable last jaunt before I head for the real mountains of the Himalayas. I carry with me the magic and camaraderie of last afternoon and the visions of stopping atop Iftar Bowl. I look forward to seeing all of you, refreshed in a month, to continue what we began. @Ashok chaturvedi: [munkybizness] was my mIRC (Internet Relay Chat) handle from the late 90s. An introverted and shy kid, it allowed me to create a unique identity online that was opposite to the one in the real world, complete with incorrect spelling and definitely up to no good. The name has since become my pen name.

I'm happy that eventually i could make it to the drive even if it meant that a. I was late in arriving at the start point, b. hence had to forego the planned pitstop at home to change into more formal attire c. hence missed picking up my customary sandwich box too. With 4 cars, yesterday's was the shortest of convoys i've been part of and loved every bit of it - that and Ale's unique idea allowed each of us to drive in all three available positions - 2nd lead, CF and Sweep (Ale didn't offer the lead position - guess for good measure 🤪; Wonder if Ale could see the entire convoy (all of three cars behind him) in his rear view mirror but that didn't stop Ashok, when it was his turn to be sweep, to announce 'all is well at the back' every 10 mins without fail - thanks Ashok, your regular updates brought smiles and pleasant break from the almost-constant radio silence. Thank you Ale @Ale Vallecchi for the 'first contact'. Had never seen the super and iftar bowls so pristine and cross-track free - ever. barring handful of refusals, the drive was continuous, fluid and challenging especially with the super soft top layer. I'm happy that we could drive 52 odd KM in about 160 mins - also the fastest convoy i have been part of travelling between Shuwiab and Badayer thank you Ashok and Mayank for the company @Ashok chaturvedi, @munkybizness

SUPPORT TEAM Pre-requisite 1) Minimum 10 any level "Carnity" drives are required after your Intermediate promotion. Once you decide to join Team Carnity to excel further with your off-roading, people, and commanding skills, you will be extensively trained by the whole Team Carnity from Expert - Marshal - Crew at various stages by supporting different levels drives. Stage 1 Support different Marshals and Crew at Newbie level drives to demonstrate: Your ability and willingness to support new offroaders. Ability to gain control of the commanding situations. And clear communication skills to help manage the convoy. Stage 2 (optional) Pre-requisite 1) Minimum supporting 6 Newbie/Fewbie drives per quarter (within 3 months). 2) Minimum 10 "Carnity" Intermediate drives are required within the last 6 months. 2) For progressing further to Advisor level, you need to receive a minimum of 4 different Marshals / Crew approval by supporting 4 or more Newbie drives, so that you can attain adequate exposure for bigger roles that come with more responsible and commanding tasks in the future. To learn and demonstrate your recovery and self-recovery skills. Help individuals to self-recover or use tow rope or winch recoveries. To demonstrate your convoy commanding skills in difficult situations. And people interaction skills to manage the convoy with clear communication. Once you receive 4 different Marshals / Crew approval, then you will be eligible for your Advisor promotion. Eligibility criteria: Maximum two rounds of 4 Newbie drives each will be assigned to you with different Marshals for demonstrating your skills, knowledge, commitment, and team player attitude. You must attain a full consensus of all 4 Marshal / Crew in either the first or the second round as a qualifier. Full 4 drives consensus need to be achieved in either round for you to proceed, else your promotion request will be rejected permanently. You may of course continue in the Carnity Off-road Club at your previous rank.

@Mario Cornejo This is gold! Thank you for sharing this valuable collation of information on tire widths and sizes. When my current tires (275/65R17) are worn out, I intend to go up to 285/70R17 for both the additional lift as well as the wider track.

Where do I start with a reply on this one @munkybizness! and how do I keep a reply short . . . let me try! Part of the joy in being in a "car" club and seeing members every few weeks is to see how they have individually adapted/modified/personalized their "pride and joy". I smile when you say stock, because every time I join you on a drive a notice something a little different about your car . . . . . . I like your description and split of modifications but I am going to politely disagree with you on the subject of those monster front lights! I've seen them in the light and the dark, definitely not an augmentation, definitely a significant change and modification haha For me I look at anything as a change from "stock" as a modification (a bit like the UK insurance firms do!), and put these into 3 (though I sub-divide 1 into to parts). Need, Want, and Waste. its also important to note that it also depends on how much of a dedicated off road vehicle you have, and what you bought before you got the bug! 1. Need - if you have a car with 4 low and decent HP then there are only 3 (edited 4) things that falls into the category. Decent flag Mount, so you cant attach a proper flag! BashPlate to save the radiator / bumper and for those with newer 4x4s that follow the trend for bigger wheels and lower profile tyres, Some new Rims and Larger profile tyres. (edited - 4th, decent tow hooks if you dont have.) 2.a Want (sensible) - For confidence and/or less hassle. A/T Tyres with bigger profile if you own an older car, Auxiliary fan for transmission cooler in the summer if you car is susceptible. Kill switch for ABS / traction control. The Bumper cut I did on my prado was the single best thing I did. I no longer caught the bumper edges and it stopped my hesitation and over cautious driving. Along with the bashplate this change gave me much confidence and completely transformed how I enjoyed my time in the desert. Ive ended up fitting a Snorkel because I'm fed up of vacuuming out the airbox every weekend in the middle of the apartment parking! 2.b Want (less sensible)- To make time in the desert more enjoyable, or just for fun, or maybe just for looks, or because you have always wanted it! Some of us always wanted to have that loud exhaust, that remap, those fancy lights, the Wide wheel track, the lifted jeep. Many of us in UAE are here for a defined or limited period, the cost of modifications and labour, along with insurance rules mean for many of us this is the only time and place to do it! 3. Waste - For those new to the desert and 4x4 life, this list will depend on where you sit on the above. Reserved for Mods that are likely to make our cars worse. . . . . Lift springs without matched damper on a car with sufficient ground clearances, or maybe Beadlocks wheels, maybe a pedal commander, Open "oil based" air filter kit. PS - I was never going to be in the "1. Need" camp and moved quickly to "2.a Want (sensible)" and now probably in "2.b Want (less sensible)"

While good marshals scale our skills, having the right company that you can look at directly in front of you gives you so much more to glean off of. And sharing convoys in my Newbie & Fewbie drives with you around meant that I had some of the best examples to emulate. Now, the sticker says it too.
