  2. @Johnno unfortunately you will have to start at a Newbie drive for your first time at @Carnity however you can apply for previous offroad experience which will help you get a jump-start if you perform well in your Newbie drive. This structure is used throughout all of Carnity to help keep all offroader's safe including yourself as a driver and your car.

    I hope this helps :)

  3. @Zed I wish I found this article earlier! Fantastic read-up. I was always interested in differential in vehicles. As I always understood how it worked in 1940s cars plain and simple for the most part. Whereas 4x4 I was always a little skeptical. This article had certainly enlightened my knowledge in this area. Good job mate. I look forward to reading some of your other articles :)

Outing myself as a fan of 4H part on sand. Started with 4H high as recommended and preferred 4H part as soon as I tried it. I do believe I have more control of the car taking away a yet another system that does stuff for me. Prefer the driving characteristics and direct control on sand with the 50:50 ratio being fixed. Didn't experience the digging down to the extent that I would say it makes a difference @Benjamin. But that could just be different preferences. Maybe the same reason I am into the oversized tires. Got used to it to the extend of loving it. Trying out the different modes I think is a way to learn more about your car and yourself as a driver. Just don't do 4h part on solid surface.

Agreed @Bjoern every time I’ve tested the two I’ve had a totally different feel in my Jeep.

part-time is great but I’ve only ever found it useful (in my personal preference) with more on the side of extreme off-roading conditions. Climbing mountains in Ras Al-Khaimah I’ve found this setting to be a useful choice.

in the end of the day these settings are totally down to the driver and their preference in the sand. personally I like having part-time as an extra aid if I were to get stuck in 4-auto which has worked for me before. Though I do prefer the feel of the car when I’m in control and not the computer. It’s a mixed bag I reckon

    Surely there are few:

    1. Cornering will not be as agile as the front and rear have the same power split.
    2. The car will be sluggish at high speeds above 40-50 kmph, as when you go above 40, Auto favors 70-80% power to the rear and 20% to the front to make driving effortless.
    3. Higher fuel consumption (slightly).

Go to empty sandy terrain, try both, and see for yourself rather than getting confused.

Adding onto this if you happen to get into a refusal when your already in part-time you’ll begin to dig down to you chassis a whole lot faster than if you were in 4-auto. However if this were to happen the other way around you may be able to use part-time to get out of the situation 4-auto got you in… if that makes sense.

it has worked for me in a practical sense a few times

  6. Hi @Josh S, it’s not surprising you were advised to use 4H-part-time this is because on the Jeep wranglers part-time is technically “full time” meaning the all 4 wheels will be spinning constantly. Unlike 4H auto which will use the onboard computer to control when you do or don’t need all 4 wheels spinning. Ideally in Newbie drives you generally don’t need part-time in fact I rarely use it myself all the way up at intermediate. However it does come in handy when you need power and all 4 wheels at an exact press of the pedal.

it’s all based on preference. Follow what @Frederic mentioned about tiptronic manual. Highly recommend you take a good few drives to understand your car once you know the RPM threshold start experimenting. Personally I started driving tiptronic on late fewbie-intermediate drives.

  7. This was a truly unique drive it is hard to find a place to start! So I'll use the age-old technique of chronological order.

From the start-point everyone was getting ready for a classic 'yalla push' drive, after a safety brief everyone embarked in their respective 4x4 when @Hisham Masaad ran into some issues starting his FJ. (Hisham I hope the issue is resolved soon Badayer needs the king back soon!) this unfortunately meant that our marshal had to retire from the drive before the journey began.

This left the rest of the convoy ready to turn back before our close-by advisor @Davie Chase (A.K,A Smooth Operator, soon to be EX popout champion 😆) came to the rescue like a knight in shining armor. Great job mate the drive went extremely well for your first intermediate lead hope to join on many to come in the future!

Moving with haste we entered into a technical patch that was both challenging and fun, once we got to long range dunes the whole convoy was ready to open up their throttles to match the heights of the toughest dunes in this area. through the dunes we met multiple different clubs with large convoys which slowed down the back-end of our flowing convoy, once we got around the other clubs without hesitation we got back up to pace  and enjoyed the rest of the lengthy dunes in the area

    everyone drove amazingly well  @Mark B @Jona @Gary F @Ignacio Quindós  @Bashar Beasha @Krishna R @Alexanderrr @Amir Amiri

    Till the next one everyone!

Hahahah, good one @Looper, maybe I want all IM to level up their game with this one, you never know.

Planning for the route, fuel station, sleep, weather conditions, sunrise, drive in the dark or with clouds, and time for breakfast and lunch is more suited for Newbie and Fewbie.

IM + Exploration should mean all participants should be ready for everything and think outside their comfort zone.

Drive detail: 4-hour exploration of the new area, where I have never driven before.

So we might cover 40 - 80 km off-road in this 4 hour, so you can factor extra jerry can or not based on your own calculations.

My own plan: As my car gives 350 km on-road and 160 km off-road, so I will carry one jerry can and drive from the nearest fuel station with gentle on gas. I most likely will cover whole drive plus driving to fuel station after the drive, but still keeping 1 jerry can because its exploration and we might burn extra fuel sometime.

Looks like a ton of fun guys enjoy it! Sorry I couldn’t make it along. Next time though for sure!

The confused mind of a desert wanderer, by @Frederic

I was half in mind, I was half in need
And as the rain came down
I dropped to my knees and I prayed
I said, "Oh heavenly thing, please cleanse my soul
I've seen all on offer and I'm not impressed at all"

I was halfway home, I was half insane
And every shop dune I looked at, just looked the same
I said, "Now send me a sign to save my life
'Cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in
    These days of mine"

You see it's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you
That I know as much as the day I was born
And though I wasn't asked, I might as well stay
And promise myself each and every day
That when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop
And when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else

But to shout your convoy to the top
Well we're gonna shout them to the top
We're gonna shout them to the top

@Frederic you would make my English teachers proud! 😂 I was half expecting you to quote the song “A horse with no name”
