Dear Friends what a beautiful cool morning it was and what indeed a challenging drive we did . Every one was on time and ready and after quick briefing we started on the track slowly to have initial glide in taller dunes as I knew what was coming could be more tight and technical . I expected to have lots of refusals and stucks more than usual but guys you proved me wrong and I really was impressed by each one of you driving skills . Well done . The main intention of this final loop was not speed more than fine driving and maintaining the needed momentum and try to focus on self recovery with keeping the shovel on the move and the rope stand by and I believe it was. Probably the true one event was my own stuck side way in super soft slip face with inclination entailed to anchor with it the car from the other side just for safety as there is no place for the slightest error here. While I was in my car I got all the feedback from outside and from different angles helped a lot and together with @marks and @Pacific bringing their cars to the other side for anchorage . @Rob S facing the front standing on foot at the ridge watching the slack/tightness of ropes and the right sided tire. @Daniel Rodas @topgear @James Thorn and @Gregoryshovelling the sand wall from the left side . And with precise communication among all ( team work ) I managed to redirect my car nose down till on the flat. My left front took a toll and popped out and fixed immediately in no time. continuing the drive driving now against slip face and that was the most demanding one and tricky where couple of crests cleared with the efforts of the team. Looping back from slip to hard as time was catching hence we took the dirt track toward exit . @Gregory thank you for making your drive to perfection as second lead keeping the enough distance which gave me freedom to scout and react accordingly👍 @Rob S meeting you for first time what a pleasure . You drove very well today and thanks for assisting me in inflation at end of the drive as my compressor has passed it’s last breath post drive 😅 @Daniel Rodas I always like to hear your Pagero roaring but today you handled the gas so smoothly in drive and recovery that the roar came like rumble 😄 @Warren Flay 3.8L SWB pagero , power and nimble excellent driving , thanks for the help all along @topgear I didn’t hear much on the radio today tells it all , thanks for your help today as well . I have to commend @Daniel Rodaswho was in front of me for his lines and his exhaust, I could always hear how much throttle was required for any particular obstacle😁

Dear @Islam Soliman @Davie Chase @JeromeFJ @Looperyou guys are simply amazing and having a great energy Mashaallah. @Islam Soliman thank you for the perfect route selection and taught us how to control the vehicle on steep dunes and to avoid fish tailing. It’s a bit challenging to drive at the end of convoy because lots of tyre marks and sand turfs so sometime have to drive from right or left 1 Mtr above the tracks. i’m totally convinced with my number because No Pain No Gain. 💪 Today I learn the perfect way to approach the dunes and decent, the required acceleration upto approaching point and speed control. Thanks @Warren Flayand @marksfor the help when I got crested. I had over 10 drives without a stuck, this is a good reminder we always have something to learn, in particular maintain the attention level high at all times. Thank you everyone. It was great drive until my radiator had the issues. Thank you @Srikumar and @Vanessa8580 for all your support and guidance. Special thanks to @Vanessa8580for towing me out to the road . Also to all other colleagues on the drive for their support and patience 🙏. We got the recovery truck in an hour and and had a cosy ride in it's cabin 😁.until the garage and were home by 15:00 Hrs. Long day but a great learning experience. Another wonderful drive, with wonderful convoy and strong drivers 💪🏼. Despite many names, and expected to have few names will not come, but all were on time and ready to go, very nice to see. After quick briefing, we started moving slowly finding smooth track good for warming up. As soon as came close to the pick rock, @Senthil Kumar had am issue with the engine oil leakage, which I think it was already there, but showed more that time. Thanking @Zixuan Huang - Charliefor carrying oil with him, which is really good to think about, and keep for urgent cases. We had to exit the car, and hope no much issues with the car @Senthil Kumar. Started moving again, and all made it to the top of pink rock, easily. After that, and the confidence built seeing all are coping with the challenges, we started moving fast and tracing dunes as much as we can. Great to see new FB drivers and old friends. @Andrew McCarthy amazing control and SL. Please make sure keeping control on the car momentum and not the speed. Dear Desertnauts Paraphrasing Churchill's words, tomorrow's drive "will be long, will be hard, and will be unpredictable". The itinerary is divided into 4 segments: 1) from Murqaab's mosque to Faqa's sabkha - mix of technical and long range dunes, some vegetation, the longest of the four; 2) Faqa to the Little Sweihan - possibility of choosing diverse tracks (from technical but straighter, to long range but longer), mostly sandy, could be the fastest; 3) From the souther sabkhas to Solar Park's edges - in the long run, vegetation may be the biggest challenge of this segment (patience required); 4) final dash (Inshallah) to Qudra - familiar terrain, we'll have to worry about some technical areas, and abundant cross-tracks. The time required to cover each segment will not be exactly 1 hour,but may vary. I am counting to reach as far as Solar Park, from 7 to Eleven, with the hope of having been fast enough, and unencumbered by problems, to manage a last sprint home to Qudra, instead of an exit. Newbie drives are all about learning tricks of driving in desert and today’s drive was such a drive where we learnt a lot. @Sita Sharma was a bit rusty in the beginning but quickly recalled what she has learnt till date. Later in drive due to sun glare she dropped into the ditch as she could not see the path that was taken but was able to recover with some guidance. Thanks to @Islam Soliman for a wonderful drive. @Davie Chase you were exceptional as a center forward. I could hear very clear and precise instructions you were giving over the radio and helping others in recoveries. @JeromeFJ your calm presence is always puts every one at ease. Ever present to help others, appreciate your efforts in the drives.

While offroading, we cross dunes by using different methods, based on how the dune is formed and what the drive level is. Once you have spent some time in the desert, you will slowly start to pay more attention to the dune formations and how we cross them. Once you reach Intermediate and Advance level, you'll need to start learning how to read these dunes in order to navigate and create your planned routes in the desert. As a rule of thumb, the prevailing wind in UAE is blowing from a North-Western direction to South-East direction from 10AM onwards. At night and in early morning it will be reversed and blow from the South-East to North-West. This is something you should remember and you will notice when you zoom into certain areas with your navigation app (Google Maps, Gaia, MotionX, Mytrails,...) you will notice that the wind from that side has caused the dunes to take on their shape. This is a general rule and will not always apply, as you will see that in certain areas where wind is coming from different directions, you will see for example "star" dunes appearing. There are different types of dunes which are separately described below. As you can see in below picture, a dune is formed when the prevailing wind blows on a mound of sand, where the grain will move into the wind direction and create a ridge. The sand which falls on the other side of the ridge, creates a slipface, and this sand is not compacted by the wind. This is the main reason why we generally drive on the prevailing wind side or the convex side of the dunes on the Newbie level. "A dune is a curiously dynamic creature," wrote Farouk El-Baz in National Geographic. “Once formed, a dune can grow. It can change shape and move with the wind. It can even breed new dunes. Some of these offspring may be carried on the back of the mother dune. Others are born and race downwind, outpacing their parents. [Source: Farouk El-Baz, National Geographic, February 1982] The shape of dunes is affected by things like the strength, direction and consistency of the winds; the consistency and amount of sand; the hardness of the terrain and the amount of vegetation. Below we will describe the most common dunes found in the UAE. Different Dunes Crescent or Barchan Dune This is the most common dune. It forms the shape of a crescent moon when the wind blows from one direction. We generally use the words concave and convex to describe both sides of the dune: * Concave is a shape that curves inwards. * Convex is a shape that curves outwards. Crescent-shaped mounds generally are wider than long. On the concave side you will have the slipface. These dunes form under winds that blow from one direction, and they also are known as barchans. Parabolic Dune A parabolic dune is similar in shape to a barchan, but it is just the opposite. The tips of this dune point into the wind, and its main body migrates with the wind, forming a depression between the tips. Because of this formation, parabolic dunes are also known as blowout dunes. These dunes often occur when vegetation stabilizes sediments and a U-shaped blowout forms between clumps of plants. Example of Parabolic dunes near Faya: https://goo.gl/maps/ob8xu3y8VJJvF6hk8 Longitudinal or "Seif" Dunes They are also often referred to to as "sand ridges" or "seifs". Their length can range from a few meters to many kilometers and their height from a couple meters high to a couple hundred meters high. Wind pushes the sand and forms ridges parallel to the prevailing wind direction with slip faces either side of the crest. Linear dunes are straight or slightly sinuous sand ridges typically much longer than they are wide. They may be more than 160 kilometers long. Linear dunes may occur as isolated ridges, but they generally form sets of parallel ridges separated by miles of sand, gravel, or rocky interdune corridors. Some linear dunes merge to form Y-shaped compound dunes. Many form in bidirectional wind regimes. The long axes of these dunes extend in the resultant direction of sand movement. Barchanoid Dunes These ridges are similar to Barchan dunes. They are connected in long crescentic waves as the sand supply is much greater than that which forms a Barchan Dune. Star Dunes These dunes are formed when there are several prevailing wind directions - there is a complex wind regime. Typically there are three or more slip faces, whilst the dunes do not migrate they grow in height. Star dunes are radially-symmetrical, spyramidal sand mounds with slipfaces on three or more arms that radiate from the high center of the mound. They are created when the winds blow equally from every direction, causing the sand dune to grow many extensions and resemble a star. They are rare and are fairly stable and remain in the same place. Some are landmarks with names. Example of a Star dune: https://goo.gl/maps/jRnYghQc8ACzVz6T7 With this knowledge, the next time you step into the desert, you can start looking at the different dune formations, and this will give you lots of knowledge that you'll be able to apply in the future when leading and navigating off-road drives.

Dear passionate off roaders When I had my first absolute newbie couple weeks ago it was short cut by bad nose landing ( was entirely my fault and I know it ) . Thank God zero human injury and the Iron was repaired as brand new. Actually from that point the real story begins and I realized how important to see the things from different angles to analyse and to learn how to avoid various problems in the setting of off road dives .I searched the various resources online and I found what I was looking for in this respectful community. and now with all the support of all of you, especially @Gaurav who was the first who drove me to safety at the very beginning and to @Gaurav @Rahimdad and @Frederic whom I had the honour to drive under their leads where I got all support and help, I can proudly say that I got my first zero refusal/stuck after 4 drives in a row as a newbie including the absolute newbie. Special Thanks to @Chaitanya D my friend and colleague who spared no effort helping me find my current off road vehicle Xterra and all the tips along. I personally believe that off road drive has a unique learning curve climbing it requires time, patience, determination , awareness of the known common risks and problems and above all that sharing and transmitting what is available from knowledge in the scene either directly by witnessing it if possible ( situation might not allow at the scene like terrain condition , weather , and now covid19 time ) as safety comes on top of the list or indirectly by capturing pictures , clips ..etc for the stuck or refusal and how we deal with it . in carnity discussion I found about what went wrong in terms of off road accident or refusal or stuck and even wrong recovery techniques and discussion about it which is good to see mistakes of others or even own to learn and not to repeat. here I put the initiative and from our own drives how recovery either self or assisted is done by our expert leaders directly or under their direct supervision and I request every one if at all possible when we are not in motion to try take the chance to take some videos ( one hand cant clap ) from another angle so after each drive the one who didn't have the chance to see it live can at least see it here. discussion is open and I would appreciate the feedback from our leaders as always.
