Dear friends what a pleasure to drive with all of you Iin a weekday morning. It felt different. For me this opportunity is seldom possible for me due to the work timing . After briefing every one was set for the quick spin starting slowly as usual till we reached the first long range dune where every one took a turn in sidy for warm up Continuing zigzagging back and forth as the top ridges had built a soft slip element that was difficult for every one to cross over in the classical criss cross . However whenever was possible we did that safely .very few refusals and stuck came along our journey maybe the funniest was my own . I think my X likes the “yoga” position recently 🤣 (picture taken by Vanessa 🙏) nevertheless the rope came out for the above one but before it was hooked @Anoop Nair @Gregory and @Juzer Gandhi were faster in shovelling that I even didn’t press the gas paddle and the car simply slides forward on D 😅. Thank you for the help guys as I couldn’t get out from my car due to sand wall . The last part before we stop at the crescent lake was the climax of in/out and sidys at slip faces which I hope was full filling . Thank you @Gregory for being the 2nd Lead , awesome as usual. @Dr Tanveer Ahmed I've got a 2020 LX570 I have only done a few things to my LX. I installed a skid plate, changed wheels and tires, did a 2-inch body lift, and extended the original hydraulic suspension due to the body lift to improve the attack and departure angles. I effectively made my LX570 into an Xtreme LX570 similar to the Land Cruiser Xtreme that was on the market a few years ago and done by the same guys. I haven't done anything with the Traction Control/VSC as turn them all off by holding down the TRAC button for a few seconds, which turns everything off. I also disable the side airbags via the RSCA OFF button Depending on what tire/wheel combination you have. I had to figure out that I needed to run on higher tire pressures, as I was experiencing quite a few popouts. I think this was due to the LX being a heavy car and my driving. I currently run on 15psi my KO2 315/70/R17 tires. I will carry on slowly carrying out some other mods when I see the need or need to repair at the moment I can see that I will be taking out the hydraulic suspension and changing the front bumper Let me know if you have any questions on what I have done

No pressure here. With temperatures hitting 40 Degrees Celsius during daytime, these kinds of full day drives are not possible to do anymore until the weather cools down again.

I have a 2010 LX570 which I will keep for my offroad escapades. Is there anyone else who has this vehicle that can suggest offroad mods, tips and tricks which will make this beast more desert worthy? For starters I have done the 'sensor' lift which can be done by changing the positions of the AHC sensors and gain an instant 'lift' of about 0.75 inches. The next mod I would like to do is installing a kill switch for the AHC which makes the car go back to the Normal height mode from the High height mode when the speed exceeds about 32kmph. I will keep this thread updated as and when I have done this. Next would be a kill switch for the traction control, Vehicle stability control and ABS Any other suggestions are welcome.

Hi @munkybizness the terrain will be different, but I assume you still will need your car to perform climbs (short, sustained, steep, etc.) then, also assuming that you will need heavier tires, and with the weight the additional equipment will bring in, then perhaps you may want to research about upgrading the gear and pinion of your car, bring it from 3.55 to 4.70. The comment I heard was specific to the AT3s 4S. I used the tires for about 40K on sand and road, there are no negative observations I can share.

@munkybizness - just a couple of comments from what I've read in this post and my own experience with the Y61 SWB: check the manual as there are 6 types of wheels and tires recommended for the Y61, if you decide to go for 285 tires, then double check the offset of the wheels so that they don't rub and damage the fenders. Your current wheels are 17 x 8 JJ, offset +ve 10mm. Also, consider the following: bigger tires mean added weight and a bigger diameter. The diameter will affect the gear ratio of your car (Y61 Automatic Transmission has an end GR of 3.55, Manual Transmission models have a GR of 4.53) and, coupled to the added weight of the tires, you will feel some under performance when climbing. The site tiresize.com has some tools to compare tire sizes, estimate the effective gear ratio and wheel offset, these will help simulate scenarios.

That what I exactly encountered too . Also noticed it today in Qudra in the morning drive .

Fewbie Desert Drive - Murqab: Convoy 2 Trip Report "Move, but don't move the way fear makes you move" - Rumi As the sun started to raise behind Murqaab's Mosque, our convoy, reduced to a small posse by a few overnight defections, agreed to proceed independently from Convoy1, which was being assembled just a few meters away. Our group was made up of very "green" Fewbies. Yet, they all set out with eagerness and determination, even though the path I had prepared for them was not an easy one: from Murqaab to Faqa along "Desert Highway 66", then across Northern Faqa (not the usual Faqa Plateau long range dunes), and on to Solar Park through the "Middle Heart". Indeed, they all rose to the challenge, and did move as a convoy, just like the Sufi poet Rumi recommends: without showing any kind of fear for the difficulties that the terrain reserved for them throughout the drive. The difficulties for a junior Fewbie convoy were threefold: 1) the technical nature of the terrain, for the better part of the first segment, and the first Faqa stretch; 2) a huge step of very soft sand resting on top of the ridges, on the hard-face side, generated by weeks of winds blowing in the opposite direction of the prevailing one, causing the crests to be very large, soft and slippery; 3) a greater than usual amount of vegetation throughout the drive, grown from the relatively recent rains, and making approaches and exits a bit bumpy. Nonetheless, the whole convoy did great. They used patience in following my sinuous route in search of the best places to cross, took great care in listening to the instructions given, and displayed quick learning in taking the best lines while climbing the soft ridges and crossing over. A few refusals, a couple of stucks and tugs, and a pop out were the incidents that occurred during an overall safe and well executed drive. It covered a little over 81 Km, in 3:28 hours of driving (4:28 total), and 26 Km/h average moving speed (18 Km/h total). @Antony Abraham, well done with your not easy Second Lead (just a suggestion to keep a little more distance in tighter closer areas). Very good and clean Sweep in difficult terrain by @Pieter Potgieter (I hope your kid had fun!). Very positive outing, with constant improvements by @Abdul Basit Khan (in your first Fewbie drive - just remember not to cross through ridges too much in a hurry), and @Sree - Fortuner(same advice as above). As a part of fun with learning we had few refusals, stucks and pop-out but all was well taken care by our lead, everyone was enjoying in super soft sand with much technical dunes although we got late to exist as per define time BUT it was excellent decision by our marshal to get late rather than taking risk. Safety is our first priority and this is the best example that our leader showed us, Carnity is the best place where everyone is in safe hands. Forgot to add: I heard that Coopers AT3s don't have stronger sidewalls. Other brands to check are the new BFG's Trail Terrain, I've seen them for sale in tire shops, and the Michelins LTX Force.

If your LX is having side airbag, then you also need a kill switch for shutting the side airbag, as on higher level drive when you do criss-cross this side airbag might deploy (expensive dent on wallet). This is most concern in US brand cars like Ford Explorer, Expedition, Chevrolet, GMC etc. But its worth checking and researching how Lexus implemented side airbag and does these fellow pop's on criss-crossing or not.

Hi @munkybizness, i drive a prado and have had the exact same issue on my front right wheel. After 2 pop outs, went and got new Methods with beadgrip. The first two rides after that were ok and on third i again had a leaking front right tyre, it probably didnt come off due the beadgrip grooves (i guess that worked out well) bt the point is its the same front right one. The next drive leaked again, that was probably my mistake as i hadnt removed the tyre and cleaned the grooves of any sand after the earlier drive when this issue happened, partly because when i filled the tyre, pressure was holding pretty good so i thought the issue is resolved. anyhow will see what happens in the next drive but ive also reached a conclusion that its not the tyre or the rim but my driving style thats causing this though i cant really point out what exactly it is that im doing wrong.

Helps having another Y61 owner with as much experience as you do here to guide me on this 🙏🏽 I’m almost giving up on climbing and riding bowls in general, because the core reason why I got into off-roading - beginning with desert driving due to accessibility of terrain - was to learn the skills & technique in traversing through it. I will now be moving onto rocks and wadis because I want to start rounding my skills as an overlander more than a dune rider. For which, I will have to make other weight additions to the car that will regardless have an even more detrimental impact on the performance. These include a drawer system, an overhead rack, side awnings, etc. So I have to start forgetting about climbs & bowl riding anyway Over the past eight months riding up to the IM level, I’ve realized that if I truly want to break through with a LWB Y61, I will need to significantly reduce its weight and improve powertrain response. Both of which are counter to why I got into this. So I will instead - when I have the capital in the future, and I’m craving the high speed pump - get a SWB Wrangler, Jeep 392, or Bronco Raptor and strip it down to the bare minimum for the adrenaline pushing dune driving As far as Cooper AT3s go, I’m more keen on the XLT variant rather than the 4S. Have you heard similar reviews about it too? I saw that you were running Coopers in Liwa so you have the first hand experience here.

@M.Seidam- what a drive it was! A steep learning curve. It was long - both tiring and fulfilling at the same time. We enjoyed every bit of it My respect for the Carnity family went up a notch because the camaraderie. Everyone showed loads of patience and willingness to support --- all with good humor. @Morshedi - You were left alone for quite some time when multiple cars were crested but did not lose patience while the convoy got back on track @ASAD.- We were right behind you watching as you showed remarkable skill to pull yourself out of the situation where you were almost stuck. We could see your left front wheel and right rear wheel spinning and at one point we thought of calling the marshal. But you did it on your own. Wow @KKIRAN- Thanks for popping out Gave us an opportunity to learn. @Michel Van Woudenberg- Planning skills while we were waiting for Hisham to help with pop out. @Danish Mohammad - Always a pleasure to ride with you. Very creative idea Mayank to commemorate that big day, big success and big challenge accepted by all drivers to make history by successfully "completing" the Liwa crossing. And you chose an excellent way to capture all the details in your sticker. Really well-done buddy.

Ex FJ Cruiser here: - As commute vehicle, yes it works, but they are having limited visibility issues in traffic, and quite thirsty. - The prices are high, but they are extremely reliable as long as they are well maintained. - The rear differential lock and A-trac are nice to have but not really needed. If you look for the Toyota Reliability and want to have a daily commute AND capable offroader, did you consider a Landcruiser Prado ? The 4.0L model has the same engine and frame as the FJ cruiser, you would only need to trim the bumper a bit and put some bashplate. But it would be a far better option as commute vehicle.
