What a boring drive...!

Drive Info With the cool winter breeze finally starting to set in, its time to hit the big playgrounds that UAE has to offer. And, there is none bigger than the monstrous dunes of Al Quaa. This area has every kind of dune structure possible, pyramid dunes, starfish dune, steep slip faces, and bowls the size of a football stadium. BOWLS STARFISH DUNES STEEP SLIP FACES This will be the ultimate test of driver and machine. You will be redlining the engine, and your car will still crave for more. And if you felt the the above was not enough, here is the best part - we will be joined by @Frederic and @Gaurav So drivers, Start your engines!!! Important Points for all drive participants This drive is for Intermediates who have already completed min. 2 IM drives with Carnity. Keep your car as light as possible. This is not a drive to have passengers. There is no need to carry extra fuel Ensure that you are with a tank full to the brim at the meeting point The plan is to end the drive when we run out of fuel (so please dont keep any kind of other appointments for that day). Take the E95 route only, as that has the closest gas station. All other routes dont have any gas station close to the meeting point. Ensure that your car is in the best possible condition. Finally, if you run out of fuel in the middle of the drive, it would be sold by the other team members at AED 100 per litre🤣. So ensure that you conserve fuel by turning the engine off at every break. Bring some quick wrapped sandwiches or lunch to eat along the way. We request every member that joins this drive to go through the below information and strictly follow these guidelines, etiquettes and responsibilities. @Gok Krish there are plenty of places to camp the previous night and I guess you will have quite a few for company. However, I would request everyone to ensure that to not over burden your cars, you will need all the power to climb some of these dunes. So try to stay as light as possible, that's why I mentioned that there is no need of extra fuel. I would most probably be driving down on Saturday morning.

Why am I always being forced to travel when Al Quaa comes up?! I think it's time I turned my boss into an offroader too... Or you can mess it all up and be forced to sleep on the "couch"... in Al Quaa 😈

Highway Star (Deep Purple Series) - Drive Report "Nobody gonna beat my car / It's gonna break the speed of sound" - Deep Purple While I usually post the drive's stats at the end, this time let's begin with them: 76.3 Km driven in 2:14 minutes, with only 14 minutes of stoppage, and a moving average speed of 38 Km/h (34 Km/h total). Great performance by the convoy, with virtually no stucks, a few refusals, and excellent execution and concentration. Nice variety of terrains, ranging from the low, long-range dunes of Ghantoot, to the high, taller dunes and deeper bowls of Little Sweihan, and the final rush across Faqa's plateau. A couple of elements allowed for a slightly faster pace than the previous Deep Purple drive: the sand track along the Army Shooting ground, and the crossing of the couple of sabkhas that separate Little Sweihan from Faqa. A couple more factors demanded a slower pace than the previous drive: a longer convoy, and the tricky crossing of Little Sweihan (more challenging than Qudra's quadrant, yet immaculately completed). All things considered, these factors evened themselves out, and allowed for a slightly faster moving speed, while keeping the same total average moving speed of the previous outing. I'd like to thank @Ignacio Quindós for his perfect Second Lead, @Fabien Monleau for centering the convoy, @Pacific for his sweep, as well as @Ashutosh Garg, @Jessica Lambert, @Senthil Kumar and @Beide Worku for taking time in the middle of the week to join these adrenaline packed drives. @varunmehndiratta I have looked into this in the early days when I bought my car and I don't think the Bestop need a workshop if you are a handyman, have a space to do this and a side kick to help. Gaia GPS is since a couple of years now a part of Outside Group. I recently found out that for Premium members, you can upgrade to the Outside+ membership free of cost during the first year, and that you will automatically get access to lots of training tutorials. NOTE: Renewal will be at 59,99USD per year instead of the regular 39.9 USD per year (Premium subscription). I was able to click on "upgrade to Outside+" and it showed "0 USD", after confirming my credit card details i got immediate access to the entire Outside+ platform with below tutorials and courses: Mapping Archives | Outside Learn (outsideonline.com) For anyone trying to get more out of his Gaia GPS functionalities i would highly recommend it.

Had similar one last year … mesh is purely for UV protection, it’s just a sun screen, will not be able to stop sand on drives and any water to pour in, if it rains. Plus Imagine going all the way to Sweihan early in morning in Dec for a drive … I was packed with Jacket(s) and monkey cap for liwa drive last year 😀 I recall @Kailas mentioned he was switching to hard top every weekend, too much work for me lazy bones 🤣 So surely need something more. It’s real fun @Anoop Nair try it and you will not like putting it back when the summer hits in.

The best approach will be - for on road and off road- is to put the co-ordinate and study the route on the phone before you start out to ensure the route is logical the final location is as expected. If we follow the route without anticipation, there is a good chance to end up in wrong destination. Happened myriad of times, especially with google maps. As @munkybizness mentioned, in India it's a different ball game all together, sure to end up in a ditch.😁

@M.Seidam there are no words to describe how wonderful the drive today was !!. Amazing scenery , nice weather and most importantly wonderful people whom we enjoyed the intermediate drive level " safely" . we went in together with a smile and we left together with laughter, wondering about the many dunes that were staring at us while exiting and daring us to conquer them. If it wasn't for the voice of reason, i am sure with such an amazing convoy we would have still been there till this moment tearing up those dunes bit by bit . 😂 time went by so fast as if we experienced the time dilation effect well done @Vaibhav flowless 2nd lead, @Waqas Parvez thanks for keeping us all packed together great job buddy . @ASAD.we have to make a dedicated REDBULL drive for you my friend 😂 @Haitham Khattab @DP1011 , Deepak wrangler @Imteeaz @Anoop Nair @ASAD. looking forward to see you again soon .

It's Google's intelligence that is recognizing you as an offroader. 😂

Having used Google Maps in other countries (especially India) where it doesn’t have the most updated maps, it has the tendency to take you through narrow streets because a) it’s either just reading the map data that says there is a road there, and/or b) has seen enough data of traffic moving through that path for it to make recommendations. Because of this, it’s sometimes taken me through narrow alleys or even into fields which aren’t really trackable roads. I have also been a power user of Waze for many many years, regularly contributing to their community mapping service online. And between the two of them, I prefer putting in the coordinates on Waze than using Google Maps. I also check the terrain view to confirm if there’s actually a road there. But this is just not enough. With the rate of construction, new roads and paths are constantly coming up so it’s crucial to intersect multiple sources of data. Furthermore, when it comes to Google Maps, try to always use coordinates, an active landmark, and the full link (not the shortened ones that the mobile app will share). The shortened URLs have a tendency to break and I’ve had deliveries to my home show up kilometers away. Long story short, folks please don’t rely on technology so much that it’s your only source of truth. As you venture off-road being able to cross-reference multiple sources to build your personal judgement is critical towards becoming a better navigator. For example, if you use Gaia, you’ll see it captures farm tracks and even trails better than Waze or Google maps which are both designed for roads only. Apply the same to your on-road navigation too. Technology is not infallible. Don’t be Michael Scott and end up in the lake 🤓

Thank you for starting this thread @Karthik Raptor. so last night, I clicked on the link from the post thread and checked the destination - it was correct. However, when I was on the way, Google maps showed a "faster route available" and once I clicked that, the ETA was cut down by 10 mins and it started taking me inside the desert. After about 700 metres driving in soft sand, I could see big dunes coming up. Stopped the car and called @Chaitanya D and he sent a Location on WhatsApp which was 38 kms away. Thank you guys for waiting for me but as @Karthik Raptormentioned, it wasn't a great experience to get started on a rush. I wasn't deflated properly due to the rush. I was running on soft suspension until someone got stuck so I had to time to fix my suspensions and off-road lights. And you know about my radio 😀.
