DRIVE REPORT There is no denying that LIWA lies very close to our hearts. It's one of the very few places where you genuinely feel like you are finding yourself on a different planet. The scale and vastness of this terrain is humbling, and the plan we had in mind to cross it from West to East entirely was no small feat. For the last weeks, with the help of @Asif Hussain, we were zooming in and out on our satellite maps, and trying to plan ahead, knowing well that you can and should plan well in advance, but a LOT of improvising would be needed to make our way through. We were quite strict on the rules prior to launching these drives, I think for the ones that joined us over the last two days will no doubt understand now what we meant. This is the kind of terrain that tests everyones physical and mental abilities. I knew that teamwork was going to be needed and it was one heck of a team that I was lucky to drive with. @Ahmad Shakeryou probably look like the most relaxed and chilled out driver in Carnity, but being in second lead you did a marvelous job and I needed a coolheaded guy on my back. The extra hard work you and @Trekado did with mounting go-pros and taking tons of photos really show your passion and friendship. It was great to see two friends having a blast together. @Trekado I am a fan of your Pajero and you driving it with the wide smile and dune buggy goggles. It was clear you had a great time and kept our spirits high ! @Salim Akhtaralways humble, quiet, but pushing the Pajero so well. It was a pleasure to have you joining us and I have seen you growing well over the past few weeks. Keep it up ! @Simon Dawood you carry so much energy, and if it wasnt for reaching Waypoint 25 and exiting out, you probably would kept driving towards Oman ! Super drive skills and super Team player. @AlexM you did not skip one single beat on this drive. You possess fantastic drive skills and keeps a cool head at all times. Really really impressive ! @Karthik Raptor could finally unleash all the horses in the Raptor, and he did that with a big smile on his face. Navigating this big truck through the difficult portions was extra difficult but you managed it brilliantly ! The Patrol boys @KKIRAN, and @salah2u (who flew in from Londen especially for this drive) taking the mighty Patrol in its natural habitat is what its all about. Excellent driving guys ! The Red army was on our backs, with @Senthil Kumar and @Richard Franks, who we now refer too as "Gentleman Richard" after seeing his amazing mini BBQ. You guys rocked ! This was the kind of drive where a good support was essential. Not often do I find someone in this role who is completely in tune with my thoughts and actions, and his support and hard work throughout this drive was exemplary. @JeromeFJ with you in my convoy I am ready to drive from Liwa to Medina. Boys and Girls, soon we will see him leading drives, and I know now already they will be very sought after and EPIC as well. With regards to the drive, as we created 25 waypoints, those were used as milestones for all three convoys, and I was super delighted to be able to camp with all three convoys together and see the smiles of everyone after a successful first day. We shared some good stories and had good entertainment from some of our guys (you know who you are) The first couple of waypoints I intentionally kept it easy and just drove straight towards them without venturing off too far. The reason was so that way we could scope the terrain and fine-tune our pace. After a couple of hours we really were all-in and had to navigate through numerous technical areas with razor sharp edges and mighty deep pockets. There was little to no error for margin but all of you navigated so well and worked together as a team. Every once in a while we came across @Gaurav his convoy, and we could smile and wave from a few dunes away and have a little chat over the radio. The struggles he had were also some of the struggles we had, and we all overcame them and kept going and going ! We finally exited the second day at waypoint 25 around 1PM, and I was extremely delighted to see that last sabkha appearing in front of us. The long winding exit track served as a little contemplation time for me to grasp what we had just done. We took 3 Carnity convoys through this stretch of remote desert and all came out unscathed, without breakdowns or issues. A big applause to @Srikumar who had the challenge of balancing a high level drive in this kind of terrain where all of us feel small and insignificant standing in front of those enormous monster dunes. @Gaurav taking his FB Plus team and not being afraid of venturing and exploring the terrains in his own unique way. Hats off to both of you ! Eventually we covered almost 135kms, and yes we had some refusals and stucks, but far less than I expected and the teamwork and camaraderie made it fun anyways. Many thanks @Frederic for these unforgettable two days. It was not one drive, it was not 2, 3 neither 15 drives, it was one journey through this Empty Quarter. Two days of crossing, navigating deep inside the desert, through these mountains of sand, from one sabkha to the other. For each crossing, finding a way up the dunes, climbing one crest after the other, choosing the line between the soft patches, the deep pockets, crossing the ridges. From the top, embracing the view, this ocean of dunes, with no sign of human activity, then finding a way down, avoiding the deep bowls, from one ridge to the other, until the daunting final drop, steep descent, straight down with the sand rumbling below the car. and then repeat, and repeat, similar, but never the same. Thanks to your meticulous planning and preparation, combined with your leading talent, we could cross safely from one side to the other, and completely enjoy the journey. Then second component was the team, because without a great team, this journey would not have been possible, or could have turned to a nightmare. And you all contributed exceptionally well to the success of this adventure. Of course with your driving skills, your capability to take your car through this variety of terrain, because this capability was required as a prerequisite, but as important was the team work and each one of you was great in your contribution. Staying focused on the drive, and concentrated during several hours, participating to the shoveling and recovery effort, keeping a positive spirit, attentive to the guidance from the support, sending jokes, waiting patiently when a part of the group was sorting out a recovery on the other side a crest, shooting pictures and videos... @Ahmad Shaker, @Salim Akhtar, @Simon Dawood, @Trekado, @AlexM, @Karthik Raptor, @salah2u, @KKIRAN, @Senthil Kumar, @Richard Franks and your passengers, thank you all for your participation !!

What an epic drive. Lot of driving and lots of fun. This drive needed a lot of planning both from marshals ( @Frederic-FB, @Gaurav-FB+, @Srikumar-IM) to organize and the participants to bring the right amount of stuff so that they can drive safely and well. After a day and a half of driving I am quite impressed by how well the drive was spread-out over two days. The majestic Liwa - empty quarter dunes are like Sirens; they invite you to ride them, but they won't let you drive over them. Often exceedingly difficult to read and extremely easy to get stuck. Half the dunes are not even drivable, but majestic and a remarkable sight. I could not even count how many times I gasped at the beauty of the mother nature here in this barren desert land. On the first day we tried to start early but covered a lot of ground and reached the 18th hole in time to set up the tent and gather around the bonfire. The first eighteen waypoints were quite easy to navigate since they were from one sabkha to another, so we wandered around and had lots of fun. Thankfully in our FB+ drive we did not face many refusals and the few that we did face - (by @Gaurav) they were masterclass in self recovery - being applauded by everyone every time he self-recovered from a seemingly impossible stuck. The camping site was one of the best I had seen. On a dried-up lake front, under the stars without any light pollution. The moonrise in the east was a sight to behold. I was tired and slept like a baby late into the morning the next day. On the second day our drive was a bit straight though the waypoints, but they were not as easy as first day's waypoints - quite challenging to be frank. But we quickly wiggled out of all the stucks and refusals and reached the end, stopping only to take a few nice photographs to commemorate our achievement on finally crossing the Liwa. This Liwa Crossing was indeed a test of endurance and grit, and I am quite happy to be a part of this first installment and looking forward to next year once again. Liwa Crossing IM Convoy Trip Report I Had a Dream by Martin Luther King. For many of the senior members at Carnity @Gaurav @Frederic @Asif Hussain and myself included, always dreamt of doing a crossing through the empty quarter. It's been on our agenda for more than few years, but every previous attempt ended in some sort of disappointment as we would encounter numerous oilfield and military fences. This time with some help from the AD Tourism Department and a lot of background research over the past 3 weeks a route was decided that would make us all Live our Dream. Liwa is the ultimate challenge for any UAE offroader, and those who participated in the crossing witnessed the most amazing terrain in it's majestic glory. Thanks to the detailed planning of @Frederic we had divided the entire track over 25 waypoints (WP) with plenty of scope to scale the level of the drive depending on the convoy response. After a thorough combined briefing of all the convoys, we set of in an Eastward direction. As soon as we reached between WP2 and 3, @Mus_hus78 unfortunately had a gear issue which was too much of a risk to continue in this terrain. Wisely, he decided that it's better to exit out. After exiting him, we again went back to the starting point and re-entered the sand. We made our way through the sabkha to WP3, from where we started making our way through the dunes. We made it close to WP 10 by around 1 pm when we took a break for lunch along with the FB+ convoy. The brief lapse in concentration after lunch showed as we had a few stucks and a difficult popout. We then encountered some beautiful spaced out dunes between WP 11 and 12 with lots of smooth bowls that allowed us to ride them and cross them at will. However the exit from this section proved to be the biggest challenge of the day. With only a narrow route available for exiting the going became exceedingly tough for the cars in the second half of the convoy. With some good inputs from some of the team members we tried some alternate routes and finally after struggling for more than 90 mins we finally found a way out. By then it was 4:30 PM, so we raced through the sabkhas clocking speeds of more than 110 km/h to WP18 where the FB and FB+ convoy had already arrived for the overnight camp. Camping in the desert under the beautiful stars is a wonderful experience, and with some great friends and wonderful stories we had a perfect evening. With still about 7 WPs to go, to hit the final exit track, we started off Day 2 at around 8 AM. The experience that we had gained from the first day showed during the second day drive as we all took better angles, kept the right momentum resulting in lesser number of refusals and stucks. By 12 PM we reached the road having completed a total distance of 203 km over a driving time of just above 13 hours. The entire course was pretty tough with sudden dips, powder soft sand, razor sharp ridges and insanely steep drops that required 100% concentration at all times. There were places that we could race up the dunes at 70 km/h and there were sections that we had to meticulously crawl ourselves through at 10km/h. As @Mario Cornejo mentioned at the end of the drive, this was a drive where all our recovery skills were put to the test. The drive also brought out an equally important point, that in these kind of drives your main strength is the team. There were numerous occasions when the entire team got together to find a way out of the situation To the entire IM Convoy of @Ranjan Das @Xavier Treasurer @Mario Cornejo @varunmehndiratta @Jorge Stepniak Felippe @Amir Amiri and @Ahab Shamaa you guys deserve a huge round of applause for some excellent driving in a very challenging terrain. There are only a handful of off-roaders that can state that they succefully completed a Liwa crossing and you are amongst them. A big shout out to the FB and FB+ convoys as well who were brilliantly led by @Frederic and @Gaurav for completing the entire crossing succesfully. A special mention to our AD expert @Asif Hussainfor all the help in the planning of this route. You were truly missed, but we look forward to doing this route once again together. There is one particular instance I forgot to mention in my previous post..which I guess requires special mention. When we were done with the driving on day 1, some of us decided to have some play time after seeing Gaurav and Sri having some fun. While some of us were still setting up our tents and @JeromeFJhad just setup his tent, got his kettle on to make some nice brew, it was announced on the radio that one of the cars had a pop-out. Without any hesitation, I saw Jerome switched off his stove, took his car and went to the pop-out car straight away (few other cars followed and they managed to fix pop-out just in time before it got dark completely). That was truly amazing team spirit I witnessed, especially after a very long and hectic day, I was like wow!!! Thanks once again Jerome!

Amazing location & landscape, amazing convoy, amazing lead & sweep, amazing bunch of people in all 3 convoys, just AMAZING 😎!!! what else to say!!!! @Shaaz Sha I see this drive differently as you brought us at the same place of last week and tried to figure it out, plus you brought to that mini liwa dune and we all safely crossed it. Prados were doing good, little struggle is ok, all will get through it as they drive often. One more things to say hydraulic jack please. @Vaibhav @MMansoor you guys are enthusiastic, good to see you again and again. Nice meeting guys @Sree - Fortuner, @Imran Kashif @Tareq Al Turq and @ASAD.. Guys after pop out please get that wheel properly cleaned and it may need wheel balancing for smooth drive. hello desert explorers. It was a real pleasure to meet you all and drive with you all today. Thanks to @Ale Vallecchi for joining and accommodating the waitlisted drivers. After a few drop outs and no shows we had a convoy of 8 cars and every one of you did a fantastic job. We had an eventful day out in the desert today with few refusals and stucks and a pop out to contend with and towards the end of the drive an extreme recovery to round off the show. We started off 15 mins late after the briefing and entered the desert attempting some long range mid sized dunes . The terrain was challenging with soft sands and bushy patches and minutes after the start we started getting few refusals. But it was all well managed by @MMansoor and @Pacific kept the convoy moving. Around an hour after the drive @ASAD. had a pop out , which was fixed in some time and we resumed the drive attempting many criss crossings , sideys and steep declines. Every one of you performed admirably. Towards the end we had to spent some time in recovering @Imran Kashif car which was stuck side ways in about more than 40 degree angle. The engine was turned off and secured by ropes in front and back from @Vaibhav car and @MMansoor car and exited the passenger. After a few minutes of shoveling the car was in a position to move by its own. Thank you @Vaibhav for being a wonderful and vigilant 2nd lead. You did a great job by keeping a very safe distance and by rerouting the convoy when ever needed. Did a great job in recovering the Prado. well done buddy. Thank you @MMansoor for keeping the convoy moving. You did great as CF today and was nice to see you coming out and instructing the the drivers. Keep it up bro. C'mon @Srikumar we don't need to share too much ..better leave certain things to imagination of ppl who weren't there to witness the fast paced drive we did in our convoy. . .

That was on the sabkhas between the dunes. May God save the guy who attempts to do that in the Liwa dunes...

Day One (Gaia GPS Link) I covered 86 km in exactly 9 hours. with a moving speed of 15.6 kmph and moving time of 5-hour 30 min. Day two (Gaia GPS Link) I covered 59.9 k, in 4-hour 42 min at a moving speed of 20.2 kmph and in 2 hr 57 min moving time.

Should I write about the drive or not? Big dilemma. What shall I write about @Ale Vallecchi's drive? Its always the best drives. Thanks to everyone for showing up on time and off on our way on time. The drivers in convoy responded well to the track laid out by @Ale Vallecchi. Beautiful clean sands and nice technical dunes for warm up. Everyone in the convoy performed very well considering their experience as FB. Never gave me or Ale any tense moments. Minor refusals and stucks which could be dealt with under supervision of Ale. Some pictures are posted in the gallery. Unfortunately not much as I was the support and the convoy didn't stop much due to driver's mistakes. Thank you @Vinod Damodaran, @Pascal, @Joseph Raju, @Jona & @Morshedi for the wonderful drive. See you all soon in the sands.

@Shaaz ShaThank you for the wonderful drive and trusting me with being the 2nd lead. Its never the car its the driver and you showed it even after you did not have your no 1 car the X. The goals set in the start of the drive were very well achieved. We went through the same patch which had thought us a lot from our last weekend drive. Felt very proud of you going there and capturing it the right way. There were few refusals and one pop out. But the energy in everyone was good though out. I would like to point out 2 thing to everyone in the Convey. 1) Do not break the convey number. 2) Distance from front car is very important. many of the refusals that took place is due to less distance. @Sree - FortunerYour first fewbie drive but you did very well. with few more drive in fewbie you will be able to get a hang of the pace. @Imran Kashifall the way from AUH. drove exceptionally well and looking forward to AUH drives with you @Tareq Al Turqhope your uncle and child enjoyed the drive. thank you for getting down and supporting. @ASAD.Good driving buddy. thanks to you everyone got a chance to witness the fastest pop out removal. @MMansoor with the Big elephant and CF.
