Update:  on yesterday’s  drive with @Foxtrot Oscar in Sharjah , I got to test the switch. I was crested in a difficult position on the side slope. I switched to 4LLC With R/D locked and tried steering left right to wiggle out. However the wheels kept spinning.
Then I switched to engage traction while keeping the rpm constant at less than 2k. Self recovery Within a minute. the car got out of the stuck and coasted down the slope.
@Frederic thanks for making us aware of this solution!

As per my knowledge and experience with xterra as soon as rear diff lock is engaged tranction control will be switched off automatically. Because technical its not possible to lock free spinning 1 wheel when its mechanically locked to spine simultaneously to the other side wheel. Hence my guess is you got out because of rear diff lock.

But i might be wrong coz i dont have any experience in Pajeros. Please correct me if im wrong. @Frederic@Frederic @Gaurav Soni

@GauravSoni and @Rizwanm2 the broad criterias which the Marshal and Crew use for the selection of drivers are as follows :

    Broad selection criteria:

Performance - Able to manage Intermediate drives regularly and without any repetitive stuck or refusals.

Experience - Able to keep constant focus at high pace driving with caution and yet courageous.

Vehicle - Able to do continuous long hill climb without any gearing or power-to-weight issues.

Safety - Able to drive without fishtailing, ride the ridge and crisscrossing safely.

Skills - Able to manage high speed maneuvers without slowing down the convoy.

Thank you @Srikumar for the update.

however i was allowed for an extreme drive about a month back but could not attend due to tyre puncture.

Hence just wondering what went wrong during my last 2 drives as sweep and 2nd lead. 🙄

however will join other drives and try to improve my self. 👍

From Middle Earth....to the Other Side - Extended Drive's Report

What better excuse than an Ironmen Triathlon, jamming the roads around Al Qudra and Bab al Shams, to keep driving on pristine sand, beyond our initial goal, until the sand hit the tarmac at Dubai's border with Al Ain. This is how a planned 3 hour drive became a monster 4-plus hour ride, and the targeted 60 something Km became almost 95 km.

A timely start saw the convoy enter the "Middle Earth" just before 7AM. The quality of the drivers, including a couple of fearless first-time Fewbie Plus members, allowed everybody to launch themselves into a sustained series of criss-crossing exercises, and reach the sabkha north of Little Sweihan in no time. After sighting a huge herd of Oryx leaving their feeding pen, we tackled the canyons and bowls of this exciting location, owing its nickname to the similarity of its high dunes and sharp crests, with the better known Abu Dhabi's playground. That's when the dilemma of heading back to a traffic-jammed Qudra exit point, or continuing to drive east on pristine long range dunes was easily solved by unanimous decision: on to Faqa it was.

This is a drive which we normally do in the opposite direction: from Faqa in the direction of Solar Park. Driving it in reverse, requires, at times, to cross dunes from the slip-face, adding an element of difficulty to the track. On top of that, I thought it would be interesting to visit the eastern-most part of Faqa, as close as possible to E44 (the Dubai-Al Ain border). This area is what I call the "Other Side" of Faqa: tall, long range dunes, with lots of ridges to be ridden, and sharp, steep drops between each dune, with beautiful trees in between each one.

As mentioned, the drive lasted 4:35 hours, covered 94.4 Km, averaged 21 Km/hour (and a very fast 29 Km/hour of average moving speed). Well done to all drivers: @Javier Lucero@Nacho and @Rob Harperdebuting at Fewbie Plus level, @Thomas Varghese, @varunmehndiratta, @Niki Patel@Yusuf Esaf and @Jeandre Bezuidenhoutconsolidating their off-roading skills. Special thanks to  @Rizwanm2 for a precise Second Lead, @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ for supporting the convoy from the center position, and @Mehmet Volga for watching over the safety of all members from the sweep position.

Looking forward to seeing you soon in the sand, I wish you all a great week.

Thank you @Ale Vallecchi for fantastic drive on perfect friday morning.

I enjoyed every bit of it till the end. Hope to see you all soon.

Go to Sharjah tire market after Sahara center and you will get it within an hour.

I had a puncture on Friday morning and in evening I replaced all 4 tires from the same market, where as all online option showing no stock or wait for few days.

    Thanks @Gaurav

    Will try that on weekend.

  7. Thank you @Gaurav, @Alexander Alcala, @Mohamed Seidam for the advices.

Even im not comfortable with driving with a tube tyre.  I have heard enough horror stories of tyre failure so better to be safe than sorry.

currently Juma al majid (dealer) does not have stock, so waiting for new stock to arrive in couple of days.

On second thought, please share the picture of the sidewall puncture. If it's less than quarter of an inch or just a hole, my above suggestions can work. If it's a big slit then no.

Sorry @Gaurav i forgot to take a photo.  it was very small and sharp metal about 0.5mm in diameter.

any way even my current spare is tubeless, its old but good working condition. so damaged tyre is no use will scrap it.

  8. recently had a puncture in one of my tyre. it was very small metal string pocked trough sidewall.  couldn't find any visual damage from outside of the tyre it was only visible from inside after removing the tyre, there was small metal string poking through sidewall.

as per tyre shop its not possible to fix a sidewall puncture, But he gave me a solution to run tyre with tube, but when i mentioned that im off roading then he said it is not recommended.

i changed these tyres just about 2 month back and there is not even 5000km on them. so can i use it for spare tyre with a tube.

What is the opinion of our experts. is there any useful life left on this or its total garbage.

By the way tyre is Yokohoma Geolander AT G015    size - 275/70/R16

  9. Thank you very much @Frederic  @Asif Hussain @Gaurav for giving us the amazing opportunity to experience one of unique terrain.  I totally agree we cannot compare Abu dhabi desert to Dubai and sharjah. Once you get into the dunes area you will be awe to see the massive dunes all around you and every other dune is a perfect playground. so you have to stop for a moment and decide which one to start with you can bash them from left to right to top to bottom or from center where ever you want.😅

Im counting days for the next trip. 🙏

  10. Thank you @Frederic for posting this drive.

Im very much exited to try my first venture into abu dhabi deserts.

ir order to determine extra fuel requirement. how many kilometers do you think we would cover during this drive.

Usually in my X i would get around 200+ km while off roading in dubai or sharjah drives.

    Trip Report:

Thanks to everyone for being on time, we were able finish the briefing and head out by 7:15. With no fog and beautiful weather we headed out into a bit of technical dunes for about 90 minutes to make sure everyone was wide awake. We did have a few stucks and refusals that were sorted quickly by @Kailas and @Rizwanm2. Once I was sure everyone was awake, we headed into the long range dunes and for an hour practised some nice long ridge rides and criss crossing with a few sideys where everyone did really well. For the last hour, we went towards the bowls and did a few loops at a little higher speed with some more criss crossing and sideys.

@Rizwanm2 thank you for being an excellent 2nd lead. You maintained the perfect distance for a 2nd lead giving me enough time to tell you when to reroute. Had not driven with you in a while and can see you have really grown in confidence. Well done.

@varunmehndiratta when we started the drive, I noticed you were a bit shy on the gas over the smaller technical dunes. The small technical ones can be deceiving, at first glance you may think that you dont need to much gas to get over it but the minute your wheels touch it, you instantly feel it hold you back resulting in a refusal or stuck. I was happy though to see over the course of the drive, you kept getting better at it.

@N@ved, driven with you on 1 newbie and 1 fewbie drive and have been really impressed with the way you handle the TJ. Whether it was a small technical dune or a higher sidey / climb, you were spot on with the amount of gas you gave it and never really saw you struggle. Well done.

@VipinShetty, well driven and really happy to see you enjoying the JGC. You managed very well and had absolutely no issues.

@topgear, Big improvement from the last time we drove together. I remember on our last drive you were struggling to find that sweet spot with the amount of gas to give it in various situations but you had it under control throughout this drive. Well done and hope the loops didn't make your son feel to sick.

@Karthik Krishnakumar, you have a very capable vehicle so dont be shy to step on the gas when required and always stick to the track of the car in front of you. Overall you did quite well and I am sure you will fine tune the rest over the next few drives.

@Kailas, Well done buddy. Thank you for the excellent support and keeping the convoy moving safely. Really happy to see you growing and taking on more responsibility with the drives.

Thank you @Brette for perfect morning drive. Enjoyed the company of all of you guys, Weather was perfect and terrain was even better.

  12. Thank you @Vanessa8580 for leading us through a challenging terrain today morning,

Even though desert throwed us every possible challenge towards us, it was a piece of cake for the whole convoy with very good team spirit.  at last we had very good long rage dunes for some sideys and action which was cherry on top of the cake.  it was an eventful drive even before it start till the end. hope everyone had a very good experience,

Cheers, See u all next time...

I believe that this is an amazing platform for off roading. Proper chasis underneath, solid axle, diff lock. Sometimes companies offers one engine at the beginning and another options follow later on. If they put the 3.5 on this than we will have a new champ on the city. I guess 3.5 Nissan engine is 306hp. With a front bumper + skid plate you will have a off road ready machine. I hope this is not me being optimistic. I hope to see that 3.5 under the hood by next year model.

fingers crossed ✌️. lets hope for the best.
