@Nayan Shenai i was able to re-program your Baofeng UV5R radio, and also updated the programming instructions. The problem was that:

    1) The default programmed channels needed to be deleted first from channels 1 till 5.

    2) When saving the frequency under a channel number (step 6 and step 7 in the instructions) you need to go through it twice. First you will hear confirmation voice for "receiving memory", and the second time you save it you will hear "transmit memory". This is necessary because in a simplex radio we always transmit and receive on the same frequency.

@E.C. TAN @Chaitanya D if you have programming issues with this radio, have a look at the Advices section, i made a programming manual for most used radios, including the Baofeng UV5R.

@Frederic , will you be present at the Morning Newbie Desert Drive - Pink Rock (Sharjah) - 20 Mar 2020. Can I collect my radio from you at this drive?

    Trip Report Convoy 1

Another beautiful morning with the Carnity Crew !

Upon my arrival at the Solar Park Innovation Centre, i was glad to see already 5-10 cars which were deflating and getting to know each-other. By 07:00 we headed out to the briefing point (thanks to @Gaurav for finding that sweet spot).

For the first time we compressed the briefing a bit, mainly because we see so many hungry faces, but also because some explanations can be done better when the action is there, and also due to the introduction of the essential briefing read on the website:

    https://carnity.com/brief

We settled for 4 convoys, and headed for the dunes, eager to taste the sand. The first half hour in my drive lead, i came across enough patches and technical dunes that i kept wondering myself if i was not somewhere in Lisailli (an area known for this more tricky kind of terrain).

Luckily i found an excellent second ead in @Nayan Shenai who kept sufficient distance, communicated with the convoy really well, and slightly rerouted on some areas where we knew  @Mohammed Osama his Subaru, or the mighty F150 from @Melenany would face difficulties.

As we normally not do any sidey's on a newbie drive, we came across 2 or 3 dunes which were perfect to do some training on steering control and momentum. All drivers managed really well and i was impressed with all of you !

Of course we had to do some straight-up straight-down dune crossings to learn that 'leap of faith' feeling, and to learn that we should not smash on the brakes, but let the car and its weight gently come over the dune.

with @Xaf as my sweep who is always a blessing to have around, and seeing him teaching some tricks to handle steep descents with big F150 truck, reassures me that Xaf is always analyzing on every drive. Comes with the job i am sure :)

@Colin Jordan i hope you can stretch your legs a bit more on the next coming fewbie drives. I am sure you will love it !

@Dale Panganiban - Fabrication, @Mohammed Osama, @Magellan @Jolly Abraham @sheri @Chaitanya D @Nitin Mohan @Melenany all you guys did really great. It takes a team they say, well then i must say it was a perfect team !

See you soon in the sands again !

Sorry for the delayed response.  But, school vacations are keeping me busy. 😁

Thanks to @Frederic, for giving me opportunity to drive as second lead. I just did what I observed in my earlier drives.  It was a wonderful day and due to the short brief session we hit the sand earlier. @Frederic leading the way and wisely choosing the path,  with some adrenaline punches,  the drive completed with minimal issues. Also, I agree that this time the convoy felt like a team! Kudos to all!!

Hoping to be in the same team again.

    Ford Explorer 2017 4WD

Basic Desert Driving Course from EDI

Available at the back. i will arrange front hook before the event.

@MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ Front hook is with the spare tyre. look for screw like thing with a circle on top. Also, if possible remove the flaps below the front bumper inorder to save your bumper from breaking.

    Hi @Nayan Shenai

Attached video explains it clearly. Just have a few things to add:

    * Put the STEP frequency to 6.25 if you program the first 4 frequencies in the radio.

*Put the STEP frequency to 12.5 if you program the fifth channel (462.88750).

You can either program these channels one by one into your radio, which is the easiest for you later on, or you can just enter the frequency without saving it.

Our radios are programmed from Channel 1 to Channel 5 according to the following frequencies:

    Capture.JPG.ca22c21a11bfcbbce0b2a1b9daccd932.JPG

Option 5 in your menu should be on Narrowband.

Option 10 and 12 in your menu should be set to OFF (we are not using CT codes).

As suggested in the topic by Dragon Mart Off-Road Gear Shops, by @Frederic, I checked with a shop for the price of Baofeng UV-5R. Its 125Aed per piece and total 30aed delivery charges for any quantity. (refer below image). For multiple pieces he may give some discount. If anybody interested let me know today, then I will order in bulk.

@Michael sammy after testing today, it seems Carnity Channel 2 is indeed getting some interference within your vehicle. We will take note of this and make sure that your next convoy that you are assigned too is on another frequency.

@Szymon Stankiewicz i was able to program your Crony CN988 with a Baofeng cable and Baofeng BF480 Software (go figure). I was pretty impressed with the battery size, build quality, and volume. Looks like you have a good model. Just unfortunate that it does not have a display, so for re-programming you will always need software / laptop and programming cable.

@balaji0007 Your Baofeng 888 is programmed as following:

    Channel 1-2-3-4 = CARNITY CHANNEL 1

    Channel 5-6-7-8 = CARNITY CHANNEL 2

    Channel 9-10-11-12 = CARNITY CHANNEL 3

    Channel 13-14-15= CARNITY CHANNEL 4

Channel 16 = CARNITY CHANNEL 5 (Backup Frequency)

To the other newbies still looking for a radio i would like to advise against buying a walkie-talkie without display, as it needs to be programmed with a laptop, software, and programming cable. We can recommend following models that are equipped with a LCD display:

Motorola MT777 or Crony MT777 (same)

    Baofeng UV5R

    Prolab WT5-WD

    Crony CN888

All are available in Dragon Mart. If you have any questions please ask on this thread.

@Frederic - Noted with thanks. Can you suggest on the Kenwood TK-UV3 / UV-9R Plus Baofeng model. If it's good.

    Trip Report Convoy 3

Again a beautiful morning in the sand with wonderful people !

With @Shamil as my second lead, and @Xaf at the back to sweep and assist, I was feeling quite comfortable. Because my wifey @Vanessa8580 had her first official drive I had to reluctantly hand over my little blue Pajero and came out with its younger and taller sister. That took a while to get used too of course, but that’s normal.

@Nayan Shenai managed great with his Ford Explorer, same as @Szymon Stankiewicz, @Rafal W., @Shiju Manuel, @Anvar Sadath Bekal, @Sherif Hamed, and of course @Vanessa8580. We had some refusals and some stucks which is always a good opportunity to learn and practice shoveling and rope recovery. All kept a positive spirit and smile handy.

One of the good things about this area is the Pink Rock climb, as it’s for many people a first time where they can really put the pedal to the metal and observe how the car reacts and behaves.
My sincere thanks goes to @Shamil and @Xaf who both impressed me with excellent recovery techniques, composed behavior to explain the right steps to the newbies, and proactiveness to quickly detour where needed or to help out someone else. You both might have had Liwa on your mind, but your heart and spirit  was with us 👍.

I hope you all had fun and some challenges along the way, and look forward to our next drive !

It was indeed a splendid drive today. I felt that the drive had levels, with initial level being a subtle drive next to camel farm on a plain off-road track, then passing over smaller dunes, fighting through substantially bigger dunes of soft sand and finally reaching the mega challenge of climbing the pink rock incline.
With @Frederic and @Vanessa8580 continuously boosting my confidence, @Shamil and @Frederic always by the side to help/ guide and @Frederic thoughtfully leading the convoy it seemed bit easier. 😊
It was a friendly environment through out in the group and a Friday morning well spent. Thanks to @Rahimdad, @Frederic and @Srikumar for arranging this drive.
Looking forward for more if my Explorer can take it. 😀

Only if you have found the threaded tow hook.

Without tow hook it is not at all advisable to venture offroad for your own safety.

thanks for your quick responses. i think i will opt out of this ride and prepare for the next.

  10. Hi All,

Glad to have found this club and joined it.

I have a Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 and have no off-road experience at all, apart from driving on the beach sand. :D

    Since I am an absolute newbie and I am joining for the Al Qudra - Solar Park event, it would be very helpful if somebody can clarify my below mentioned doubts;

    1) Do I need to have any equipment before I join the drive? I have no off-road equipment as of now.

    2) Can I use Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 for this drive?

    3) Can a friend or family member accompany me during the drive?

    Thanks in advance.

Looking forward to have wonderful off-road driving experiences :)
