Post Drive Report Liwa YT #2

Waking up inside my condensation filled tent on Thursday morning I was filled with a little trepidation of the drive and day to come on what would be my 2nd lead into Liwa in search of the Yellow Truck. I should not have worried. With a fantastic convoy and support, we completed the drive in less time than I expected and without incident - a blessing for all, as it meant that the day was not extended to the point where drivers are too tired to continue to concentrate, and we had such wonderful smooth running that the people on this convoy are probably asking 'what's all the fuss about?'. 

My first call out is going to the amazing support team. First on what list is @Thomas Varghese. I asked Thomas to play the role as sweep for the day. He has massive experience, so I knew his drive ability already. What I saw was a fantastically supportive, balanced and enthusiastic support throughout the day. We benefitted from the fact that at the back of the convoy no-one was left behind, that the drivers at the end knew there was help nearby if anything happened and we did not have a lot of radio chatter so everyone could focus on the task in hand. 

@Richard Franks has been my 2nd lead before. I knew I could trust him to follow where needed and find another way if required. In these drives that is not the easiest of tasks, but Richard managed to reroute when I came across the recently born camel and her mother and after I had driven into the only impossible to escape from bowl of the day. Other than that, Richard faithfully and expertly led the convoy leaving me to focus on navigating the best possible route forward. 

While it was not the busiest day for support, @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil demonstrated once again his immense value on a convoy. It leads to a question: Does Alain ever lose his cool? Probably not. Even though he had spent 6 hours in recovery mode the day before, this was also a flawless performance. 

The rest of the guys on the convoy @Damien Ranjit @ShereenMK @Alphin Aloor @Nabeel Abdul Rahman & @Alexanderrr you were amazing. You were the first Carnity convoy to see the revised Yellow (not so Yellow UAE 50th flag) Truck. Because of the incredible skill you showed, the additional time that I factored in on the drive for refusals and recoveries, was simply not needed..  Never under estimate your achievement in driving this route, through some of the softest sand patches we face, the star shaped technical dunes, climbs to the top of dunes and descents to the bottom as anything other than magnificent. 

Truly, I was surprised at how quickly we made it through the drive. And, as I say, we could have pushed harder, of course, we could have added a few more climbs and descents, or play bowls: but let's put that into the context of the day. The two other convoys that were from Carnity that left with us both had to return to the start because of mechanical failure of one of their vehicles. Neither made it to the main road before it was dark. 

You also benefitted from the recce drive I had made the previous day ... because we could increase the pace significantly as I knew where we were headed. 

For me, it was a perfect 50th Anniversary drive, because I could claim to have gone to one of the iconic UAE 4x4 locations, witness the transformation of the Yellow Truck into the Yellow UAE Flag Truck and still get home to Dubai to enjoy an evening of National Day celebrations.

You can't ask for more than that.

As anedocte he drove me out of the desert in an unfortunately pop-out festival I had before summer that made me drive in the end with three tyres of mine and a fourth one courtesy of a fellow convoy member ... useless to say the car wasn't in its most drivable conditions , yet his lines made all the difference. Lots to learn from him !

But also my first drive with @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil in support function! Looking forward to learn about your learnings Alain!!! Well done on the deserved progression! And my first drive with a long time friend @Michel Van Woudenberg and his FJ40... we met literally across the world and it will be the first time we drive together in Liwa!

As you have suggested its not humanly possible to wake up in the middle of the night, drive almost for 3 1/2 hours to reach that meeting place, deflate, put up the flag and be driving another 8 hours in the desert which is one of the harshest environments and then drive all the way back. I even suggest the convoy should move back to Dubai together after the drive as it will be much safer to be driving with friends rather than speeding alone in that highway dead tired. For anyone who wants to have the luxury of a cozy bed and a good room, the room rents at nearby resorts start at 1800 AED per day. 

By the way whenever I drive to see my daughter and son in law I see most of this desert and have to control my urge to drop that plan and deflate to jump into those beautiful desert dunes and explore. Thanks @Carnity club for the opportunity to do the exploration with like minded friends.

I have a Jeep Wrangler which I believe has a 100 litre tank but am sure I need some spare petrol. I do no currently have a Jerrycan but what capacity would you suggest?

Hi Richard, 

Thanks. That's great. Knowing we have one on the drive is useful as it helps me in thinking about responsibilities and convoy position. 

I would advise a 20L can, just in case. Last year in LIWA on our TJ (SWB) we were completely out of petrol by 3.30pm. We would not have got out of the drive without additional gas (20L - but I think that the tank on the TJ is only 55L. 

You can always fill by the side of the road if you don't use it in the desert.

Welcome to the drive - you all made it this far. To make sure you make it to the start line, please do read carefully the post above. We will be checking all cars before we leave. Once into Liwa, there is no easy way out like on our normal Friday morning drives. 

So, please, come prepared. It's a long way back to anywhere if you find that you cannot drive once you are at the start line. 

As I am driving the Fewbie drive on Wednesday, this will be my 2nd Liwa lead and I hope to use some of the learning from day one into day two. But let's not kid ourselves. For a first time driver in Liwa, this place is immense. The size and scale of the dunes is massive. Descents off the top of a crest can be 100meters and more - which means that there is no way back as a reroute so we need to be sure everyone is driving with care and concentration throughout: especially me!

We will not, however, be driving at breakneck speed and trying to claim every dune - but making sure we enjoy the majesty and grandeur of this place. 

Even with the great support we have on the drive in @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil we will need to be looking out for each other and being prepared to get involved, or not, when required. I'll cover that in more detail once we are all in place at the start of the drive, and set the convoy numbering at that time in case someone does not make it for what ever reason. 

For those of you pondering, should I camp the night before or drive up in the morning? Let me put is this way ... If you think that you will be a great team member to the other drivers in your convoy having got up in the middle of the night, driven hundreds of kilometers before arriving at the start of the drive and then started a 10 hour drive in the heat of the desert, before you even think about  driving hundreds of kilometers home, then feel free to do what you think is right. 

One question, just in terms of preparation: Please let me know if any of you has a winch. That just helps us in deciding where the convoy positions could be. 

Other than that, look forward to seeing you all on Thursday, bright eyed, and bushy tailed.

Welcome - we are the Fewbie team for the drive on Wednesday. With the support of @Jeepie and @Niki it looks like we have a great day of adventure before us. 

A word of caution: This will, in some ways be an exploration drive. I did not yet lead in this area so we need to be prepared for anything that might come our way. 

Housekeeping - please look at the post above. It's essential your vehicle is in good condition before we leave. We will be out the whole day, there are no easy and quick exit routes, like in other drives. Once you're in, you're in. It will be grueling on car and driver, and the sands in the Liwa area are deceptive. There are humungous dunes and long descents. If someone is at the top of a dune that we descended with a problem, we cannot quickly and easily reroute and come back. That's why we are so lucky to have the support on this drive we do. It will instill confidence in me to know that there are such experienced drivers in the convoy. 

I will be deciding on the final convoy order on the day of the drive, depending on whether there are people that don't make it to the start and identifying the best position in the convoy for everyone. 

PLEASE - if one of you has a winch, let me know. It's good to know this from the outset in case it's needed and that also helps determine where you might be in the convoy. 

Otherwise, Liwa, Yellow truck is almost a right of passage drive. The sights we get to see are quite stunning so bring your cameras. We will be stopping for photo breaks and food breaks when needed as well as taking a bit of time out just to enjoy the nature around us. We will also hopefully get to see the rare black racing Camels in the farms we pass on the way in (for anyone wondering they are actually native Australia).

1. Please ensure that you are there at the meeting point on 7:30 AM sharp. Late comers would be sent back. 
2. Firstly, get lots and lots of rest the previous day. The more the better as Liwa will not only challenge your vehicle but your mind as well. We would need your complete focus and fatigue due to less rest is the last thing that is needed on such a terrain. For those who prefer camping the previous night, you can do so at the starting point as its a nice spaced out area. Bring some firewood incase if you wish to have a bonfire to keep you warm. Cleaning up after the bonfire is mandatory.
3. Ensure that your 4x4 is well serviced recently and all the lubes and fluids are topped up.
4. 20 Liter / 40 litre fuel jerry can is needed depending on your vehicle. If you have any doubts, please post your query on the drive post and we will assist.
5. A full fuel tank at the meeting point.
6. Spare tyre should be in good working condition. If not been used recently, ensure that you take it out and check the condition properly. Also ensure that you have the wrench that can be used to remove your tyre (if needed). In the past we have seen that people upgrade their tyres but still keep the the original wrench which is of no use to remove the upgraded tyre. So please ensure that your car has the right tool to remove the tyres (if needed).
7. Air compressor, proper shovel, flag, fire extinguisher, first aid kit,
8. Fully charged radio (tuned to all Carnity Frequencies) with spare battery / radio. If you have a car charger for your radio, please bring it along.
9. Please ensure that you know how to switch off traction control (turning off Air bags is not mandatory for this drive). If it requires pulling the fuse, please research before the drive or better still, post your queries on this drive post and we would assist.
10. Car charger / battery pack for your mobile.
11. Plenty of water, approx 5 litre per person per day.
12. Bring along your breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc in easy to eat packing. We shall be having breaks in between the drive.
13. Dry food, energy bar, cookies, nuts, crisp to munch while driving
14. Bring garbage bags along to carry your trash. Littering in the desert is strictly prohibited.

My advice is that for safety, it's not the best idea to drive up, then drive 10 hours in the desert, then drive home. Your choice entirely, but I  would not do that.

You will learn to self-drive your vehicle from experts having decades of off-roading experience in the UAE. This area offers a good mix of playable long set of dunes and broad ridges to practice your off-road skills slowly but surely.

Drive is open for all 4x4/4WD/SUV/AWD vehicles having

• 8-10 inches of ground clearance and (MANDATORY)
• Front and rear tow hooks (MANDATORY)

This is an off-road drive for beginners where you'll drive and learn at your own pace:

• This is not a training session.
• This is not a 1:1 teaching class.
• This is not a Desert Driving Course.

Meeting time: 7:00 AM (SHARP - Without any exceptions)

What to bring along: Tire deflator, pressure gauge and compressor, Loads of water, snacks (for yourself), face mask, rubber gloves, enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
