Hi.
Ben here.
2005 Tj Wrangler. Manual, 30in tyres and mild lift. Otherwise stock.
No previous offroad experience.
I don't currently have any of the required equipment, but plan to pick up things this week. Do you have recommendations? What's worth spending money on now and what's worth buying something basic till I know more.
Thanks.
Welcome to Carnity @Benjamin williams. The flag, radio, and may be compressor are the basics for now. Dragon mall is a convenient destination to shop for those.
The below post provides a nice referencehope this helps

Dear @Jesper Weltström @lucas amat @george charbel@Ben Lee @James Lovell @Usman Basit @Juzer Gandhi @Misha Puskar it was pleasure driving with all of you this morning and you all did a great job crossing Lisaili to Qudra lakes demonstrating great driving skills, patience, and team work.
Together we experienced different types of terrain ranging from baby tight dunes, bushy and bumpy grounds, med size long ranges, small bowls, finally closing with the lavish green lakes.
From staring crossings, long range sidies, arches, and even basic crest crossing and you all did very well with great coordination communications
We also experienced the magic of self recovery using controlled gas and steering, shoveling, and rope towing recovery techniques..
With all of the above you covered on the itinerary you covered over 54KM in around 3hrs.. a great indication of how well you all did, Bravo everyone 🙌🙌🙌
a huge shout out to the outstanding support of @Davie Chase and @Fabien Monleau and the excellent second lead by @James Lovell
@Misha Puskar I wish you speedy recovery and hope to see you soon on the sand along with the rest of the team
@babaski I hope everything is ok with you, we didn’t hear anything from you and you didn’t show up this morning. For future please rsvp out by Thursday if your plan changes or at least notify on the forum that you won’t be joining..

This was my life's first experience with a snatch block and based on theory and videos we should've placed FJ in between Raptor and Wrangler for 160-180 degree (most effective) pull. But not to let FJ slip in the same hellhole, I placed FJ at a 90-degree angle to maximize winching power by 1.5X if not double and also to use two car weights to anchor.
With a single winch that recovery has reached its limit, as we have learned from Ranjan's winch hitting the max ceiling the previous night. And also when we remove the snatch block and FJ tried to pull alone, it really didn't move.
My second observation if we somehow would have elevated the winch line by adding another car in between, the winch line would have taken a better load to pull than slicing through the dune. Just an afterthought...!
We really need a winch day out to practice and learn what really works and what doesn't in real-life situations. I already have 5 sign up from winch owners, soon will plan a drive solely for this exercise and test all configurations.
I am trying to visualize the situation and based on the pic and drawing my understanding is that the purpose of using the snatch block was for leverage and not force redirection.. so based on that understanding I believe the best position of the snatch block would be directly connected to the dead car (Snoop’s in the case), and the winch rope would go around the snatch block back to the winching car or another car as anchor.. this would give leverage almost doubling the force on the dead car and reduce helge stress on the winch ..
can’t wait to play with this and apply to different scenarios when we meet

I have done this several years back with friends including overnight camp and BBQ on top of Jabal Alharim.. with multiple stops at interesting view points along the way.. crossing to UAE back from the other side of the trail is not allowed for expats as @munkybiznesssaid so you have to turn back and follow same route through Khasab.
P..S. If u are camping on top of Jabal Alharim make sure you have more than enough stuff to keep u warm at night and early morning hours .. it’s freezing cold

Very well said @Davie Chase.. it was a fantastic day very well spent.. total driving of around 18 hours and covering around 700km with 150 on these amazing dunes. Prompt alerted 2nd lead of @Zixuan Huang - Charlie and having @Ranjan Das and you @Davie Chase at the back made me quite comfortable in executing the plan and pushing the limits four a normal F+ drive level on both speed and climbs. The great skills on the drive also helped me go even more bold specially on the last hour run to YT and all the way back to the gravel track thanks to @Zulfikhar Naiyar @Ashutosh Garg and @Karthikeyan Govindarajan.
Despite of some moments of stress and heavy exercises specially with the horrendous 80m climb on that extremely soft bowl to anchor @Zulfikhar Naiyar’s stuck car on the center of the bowl .. outstanding team effort and safe recovery with no pain other the terrible burning muscles 🤪.
The scenery with these red sand beautifully mixed with black stone formations here and there and clouds casting dark shadows on the gigantic dunes was a sight to be always remembered.I enjoyed every minute, the drive, the dunes, the recoveries, the lunch by the Yellow Truck and @Ashutosh Garg nice mini kitchen setup for freshly made coffee enjoying beautiful breeze and charging our energy to the second part to the exit, and above all your great company!
thanks for making this day a memorable one and looking forward for a Back2LIWA drive soon InshaALLAH

Hello everyone.. thanks a lot for RSVPing to this drive which is not becoming a challenge as I hate to leave anyone behind. However it's neither practical nor convenient to all 29 cars in one convoy.
In order to try and accommodate as mush as possible without ruining the fun for all, I ask everyone please to double check their schedule and in case of any change please RSVP out asap so I know who is in and try to fit in as mush as reasonably possible.
Stay tuned for updates!
