  1. Thank you Carnity for providing newbie such as myself opportunity to be able drive in the Liwa dunes. The drive helped in many aspects such as planning for such long haul off road drives for me and preparation that went into participate.
Qudos to all the members of the convoy as they supported each other in the drives.
A big thank you to the marshals and the senior members- @Srikumar @Vanessa8580 @Pancho, V  of the convoy who were the safety net and instilled confidence in us that we could do it!
Again, got to learn a lot about my own driving, the desert, the car and people.
The final  ascend to the top of the Moreeb dune which challenged us mentally, the skill and the machine, rewarded us generously with confidence and sense of achievement!
    Besides the driving also

    1. A new place added to my list and probably one on the top for a re-visit

    2. Learnt about possibilities of camping in the desert.

As we are getting closer to Liwa, there is an important update. It seems that due to the national Day holiday, a huge rush is expected at the Ghantoot testing center especially during the day time and probably till late in the evening. And so, if you dont have an appointment there will most likely not let you in.

Hence, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND, everyone to do the DPI test in advance through the SEHA app at the National Screening Centers. I am sure that none of you would want to miss the opportunity of Liwa just because of the DPI test.

@Srikumar thank you, have arranged for a dpi test tomorrow at Shj🤞

  3. Very true, I can relate to Scenario1:In  the rear view mirror since the angle of view shows the lower level and the wings mirrors also limit sight and feels weird while reversing down a  slope our brain wants to see other wise so we tend to do that I guess, I don't do this when I am reversing in known areas- in my parking for eg total rely on mirrors and usually one hand though- but I recall doing it in desert after I find  mirror image confusing some times even unable to distinguish between the ground and dune behind so the tendency is to look back to get which causes only hand to stick on the wheel. need to practice to be 100% aware rather than our sub-conscious driving kick in.

Scenario 2 and 3 -ditto need to practice being mindful and remember what not to do

  4. Thank you @Frederic, just the question I had and got the answer however there seems to be some opinions to drive in HLc.

Also, in some drives when the we stop because the convoy has stopped for  a reason, we may find ourselves in softer sand and trying to move slower feels like we are going to dig ourselves in-not sure if others have experienced this. Whats the approach to be take to avoid digging ourselves when we try to move as the convoy moves? Do we choose HLc here as we need to start moving in convoy ? or is it okay to always use HLc? If HLc is not always recommended, why not?

Raising the stakes: Faqa Arboretum 102, Newbie Drive Report

Some drives start one way and end another. It was the case of this Newbie drive: it had been planned as a leisurely loop in the Faqa area, and it ended as a much faster paced, fun packed ride all the way to Solar Park. Praise must be given to the quality of the drivers, who negotiated the first long range dunes of western Faqa so well that, once reached the planned midpoint of the drive in no time, prompted me to divert the track into the taller dunes' area, rather than turning back toward Faqa Town, and go all the way to the sabkha leading to Solar Park. This is how a previously driven Newbie itinerary executed in this area (Faqa Arboretum 101), which lasted 3:30 hours for 47.3 Km, became an almost Fewbie drive of 5:00 hours (not all moving) and 60 Km.

Along the way a few lessons were learned. First and foremost, I am confident that the necessity of never fighting gravity became engraved in all the members' minds, following a couple of tricky approaches to a taller, steeper dune, which resulted in a couple of wheels up in the air, and in a perfect sideways stuck. On a very positive and encouraging note, the whole convoy kept its motivation, put its collective head down, and marched on toward Solar Park, rising to the challenge of learning the principles of approaching the ridges, riding the easier ones, and practicing safe criss-crossing of low, wider dunes, toward the end of the drive. The day ended with mostly refusals, a few stucks, quickly solved by our Master Sweeper Angela (AKA @Foxtrot Oscar), and quite a few relieved yet smiling faces.

Well done to all the not-so-Newbie members: @Federico Galbieri for further improving in his Second Lead position, @Kaile Barrameda for her resilience, @Federico De Chirico for his persistence, @GauravSoni and @sri ganeshfor their fast learning, @Pickey Singh for continuing to master his new mount (congrats on your first recovery), @Sandeep Padhi, @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ and @Aravind Padmaraju for an impeccable drive, @Ahab Shamaa for attending his last Newbie drive (welcome to Fewbies), and @Malachy McGrogan for the perfect control exercised on his beast.

As mentioned above, the drive took 5:00 hours, went for 60 Km, at an average speed of 12 Km/h (but a much brisker 23 Km/h while moving).

Congrast to all drivers, thanks for coming, and hope to see you soon again.

    Dear @Ale Vallecchi, @Foxtrot Oscar

Thank you for making the drive a memorable one and Ale thank you for the amazing lessons during the drive and the deciding to make it more fun by the diversion! Many lessons learnt again on this drive

Thank you @Foxtrot Oscarand @Pickey Singh for the help in getting me out of the stuck situation.
