Hey @Frederic, it looks like you have 11 wait listers so far. Is it possible to have 2 intermediate drives if another marshal volunteers to lead a second procession? @Ale Vallecchi and @Gaurav did that on the RAK scenic drive.

I totally agree with the idea proposed by @Ahab Shamaa and request CC management to make the decision.

    DRIVE REPORT

    Dear Desert Wanderers,

Al Qudra is the off-roading backyard for most of us: a well known territory, usually associated with the idea of fairly easy drives.

Today's drive was specifically meant to get past this stereotyped image and prove that even Al Qudra can be a very challenging place for off-roading, even at Intermediate level.

The whole convoy (at the end we were 12 cars, which for a Monday afternoon Intermediate is probably unprecedented in Carnity), was diligently ready by 3.30pm sharp, and 10 mins later we closed our briefing and hit the sand.

During the previous couple of days more than one participant had made it clear that the expectation for a real Intermediate level was high, and my drive brief had certainly contributed to such expectations.

Well, I think the convoy got a good taste of an Intermediate Drive today. After a couple of minutes of warm up, we started a very fast paced stint along a nice group of mid-sized long dunes.

It was a shot of adrenaline that woke up the whole convoy: anyone who had plans for a relaxed drive doing some photos here and there immediately came to realize that this wasn't such drive, and that - as promised in drive post and radio brief - this was, on the contrary, a drive requiring the full, undivided attention of every driver.

As Carnity Advisors say, a Leader in an Intermediate drive doesn't use the rearview mirror that much, and I must say I didn't.

Today's convoy was bombastic, really fantastic. Whatever I threw at them they chewed it without hesitations.

From what I could see, @Ahab Shamaa, who had made the impossible to be able to join the drive, chased my tail very closely, making an amazing 2nd lead in all situations, while @Jon M, who was in his 1st Intermediate drive, was definitely faced with a whole new game, but stood to the challenge magnificently.

@Ashok chaturvedi's yellow FJ Cruiser did wonders today as we didn't spare any possibility for breaking crests and doing high speed criss-crossings both from windward side to slipside and from slipside to windward side.

After approx 40 mins we completed our first stint and entered an area of smaller and more technical dunes, which I tried to spice up with some very quick and tight turns and tons of sharp criss-crossings.

It was here were we had the first serious stuck, with @Islam Soliman's GMC Yukon digging down in a small bowl of soft sand, which gave me the chance to inaugurate my brand new winch.

A few mins after I got crested in a moment of hesitation. Being an afternoon short drive, we should have opted for a quick tug (which eventually turned out to be the solution, with @Anish S, performing an exemplary recovery), but we instead indulged shoveling, as @Mohamed Seidam's contagious enthusiasm couldn't be contained in those moments.

After crossing a sabkha, we then started the 3rd stint of our drive, this time on the longest, tallest, and most complex dunes of the day.

The drive had been named "The Slip Side of Al Qudra" and I think that if anyone had not yet understood why I had chosen such title, he/she had pretty much a clear idea at this point, as we probably dived down on slip faces at least 100 times during this section of the drive.

We had a couple of crested cars, brilliantly and quickly recovered, and in general the convoy did incredibly well along these high and complex dunes.

@Tariq Carrimjee, @Jorge Stepniak Felippe and @Ilya Golubinsky found finally adequate challenges for their capable Wranglers. Certainly today wasn't the ideal occasion for an open top drive, as @Tariq Carrimjee realized.. 😂😂

I was honestly amazed by @Gaurav Soni, who pushed is Pajero to an outstanding performance.

Equally astonishing was @Jack Thomas, who had the hardest job of all today with his intercontinentally long F150.

By 6.10pm I was planning our way out across the last few dunes to get out on the sabkha and eventually to Bab Al Shams. It was probably because we all felt a bit exhausted and started relaxing in the anticipation of the imminent exit, that the classic last minute disaster happened:  literally not more than 50m away from the safe flat sabkha, we suddenly found ourselves in a couple of difficult bowls, where we had 3 pop-out and two stucks, one to be winched out.

@Jack Thomas's two pop-outs in 15 mins were part of the game, but they should be considered a badge of honor in today's drive, as they both happened in the most difficult terrain of the day, which costed me a pop-out as well. He's still light-years away from the all-times record of pop-outs that I still hold, so he shouldn't get too excited about today's double..😂😂

The last minute disaster costed us a bit more than a full hour, so we finally made it to the tarmac by 7.30pm. All tired but, behind our masks, certainly smiling.

Congratulations to everyone for a majestic performance today. I hope you all had fun as much as I did.

Also, many thanks to @Islam Solimanand @Anish S for the great help in the final messy 45 mins. Your help was key to sort out the pop-outs, especially the last one, fixed in a deep bowl and in the dark. Equally my gratitude goes to all the others, who patiently waited on the sabkha: this solidarity and team spirit is one of the reasons I love driving with Carnity.

See you soon at the next mid-week drive, Desert Wanderers!!

@Lorenzo Candelpergher I surely would love to nick name you the flying lorenzo..it was a wonderful pace and I enjoyed being on this drive. Amazing is the part that you drive a Nissan Petrol long wheel which is a super heavy luxury SUV but your talent is such that you make it look so easy to drive. Among the drive objectives as you mentioned one was to enjoy the desert view but the only view I had is my bonnet and the tracks of the car in front me such was the pace. IM is an experience I feel a bit challenging with 100% concentration... .

    Dear friends

Please allow me to tell my own experience and approach ,and this is me , as I was having this fire of passion inside of me toward this inherently risky motor sport. I started from the scratch with an incident that can avert anyone of taking a second chance. For me it was “ what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger “ and “ we always fall to stand up again “ ....  And guess what when I was promoted to fewbie the next drive I did was newbie and by the time I got to IM the next one was F+ ... some one may finds it strange but for me helped me to see the bigger picture . Yesterday I was sweeping in Rhahim’s bhai drive and it was different when I did sweep as fewbie couple weeks ago .

trust me friends the more you do the more you know and the more burden comes on your shoulder and as a trip lead ( I am not ) the safety is red line that Carnity cannot compromise at any cost

Viva to all desert lovers who share the trust and love among each other .

    Cheers 🙏🏻🌷🚙

I actually did the same after become IM; with my new FJ did 4 drives and master class before going for my IM.

Unfortunately @Hisham Masaad, @Junaid120120 and @Thomas Varghese do not qualify for this drive and have been removed from the RSVP.

It should be said, however, that, in consideration of the limited number of Intermediate participants, we may consider to downgrade the drive to a Fewbie+. A final decision will be made by tomorrow, Sunday 21st, by 5pm and you will all be timely informed.

My request would be to keep it for IM but shall in all case abide by the Club decision..

    Trip Report

It's been a while since I have been so satisfied after a drive. With a last minute back out of my previous IM drive, when @Foxtrot Oscar mentioned that she might not be able to do the drive, I immediately jumped on it with both hands. Thanks Angela for letting me lead this drive.

The adrenaline is still racing a bit when I reminisce the events of yesterday, and the full credit goes to the entire convoy for keeping up the pace thought the drive. Honestly, at one point I stopped looking at the rear view mirror and kept driving as I was quite confident that everyone would make it through.

What is even more commendable is that we had a lot of first time IMs with us, and they also matched up the pace. And also wherever it was not possible to scale the full height they would exit out early and then reroute to rejoin the convoy. This is an important lesson for all Intermedtae drivers that it's important to understand your car limitation and keep continuously driving so that the convoy doesn't stop. Well done.

@MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQQ was my second lead and he did a fantastic job of keeping the right distance, stopping when he noticed me struggling and following instructions to reroute the convoy.

    We had @Ahab Shamaa

and @Abu Muhammad who provide a lot of support in helping recover the stuck cars when needed. Unfortunately the drive did have it's fair share of casualties with @Yasas Dharmadasa radiator pipe coming loose and his car overheating in one bowl, followed by a busted radiator for @Athula Dharmadada at Super bowl. It again stresses the importance of having well maintained cars (probably more maintenance than what you do with a road driven car) while doing fast paced IM drives. Since we were only half way into the drive when Yasas car had overheated, we decided to leave it behind and continue with the drive, and come back after an hour to pick it up. We then had the second incident with Athula's car, just after he scaled Super Bowl. While it was clear that Athula's car would need a mechanic to get it repaired, we were still hopeful that we could go back and get Yasas's car out. That's when we started a night drive session. Unfortunately, with some crank noise coming from his engine it was best to leave it and to get a mechanic the following day. Hope you guys are able to sort out the issue.

Fantastic driving by the entire convoy of @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ @Rizwan Waheed@Athula Dharmadada @Yasas Dharmadasa@Abu Muhammad @Ilya Golubinsky @Ashok chaturvedi @siddharth maheshwari @Jack Thomas @Ahab Shamaa . You all did really really well and I hope you enjoyed the ride. As for myself, I hope that I would be able to drive with you guys in the near future on the same route and traverse some of the dunes that we missed yesterday. Till then, take care and drive safe.

Yes thanks @Srikumar your leadership and night navigation was commendable.. though once I did do night as sweep with with you but the terrain was not so challenging as last evening. I purposely did not tax my new FJ too much on the climbs coupled with my bruised rib. I am sorry for the two drivers who had to leave behind their vehicles for mechanical issues. I wish to thank all our fellow drivers but expectionally my dear friend @Ahab Shamaa and @Abu Muhammad..

If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.

I don’t think a convoy has ever departed so close to the meet time, it was 2:05pm and we were ready to roll and roll we did straight into the dunes  which resembled a skate park! They’re low and curved, with ample opportunity to get a feel for the sand. During the gentle phase we had a couple of refusals, the dunes are scarred with tracks and the sand can be soft. However, this is Badayer, and we were lucky to not have too many 4x4s alongside us.

We swept, sloped and turned, building ourselves up for the more challenging dunes that lay ahead. As we attempted the first challenge, we had a couple more refusals and @Athula Dharmadada's battery disconnected. That didn’t take long to fix and we continued on our way, but not before I had to remind the convoy of off-road etiquette in my best ‘Teacher’s Voice’
😉 safety is paramount guys thus why we have strict convoy discipline we adhere to.

As we headed to even more challenging dunes, we had to reroute a couple of times as some of the convoy struggled with the soft sands and steep climbs. I did say we would either rattle the throttle or we would head step by step. It became apparent that step by step would be the way to the top of Area 53. With one more refusal and with tyre pressure checked we headed off in a different direction. We finally started to build some momentum as we neared the top of the dunes. There was some really nice small bowls to sweep around and it was all going so well. I was even contemplating carrying on with my planned route, at the risk of some night driving, when it was my car’s turn to ‘clunk’. It was all the sign I needed to say we should exit. Reluctantly, I limped along to the nearest exit. We actually covered around 35km in 3 and a half hours, more than I had initially thought.

@Mohamed Abo ElKomsan you learned a lot today, not least the art of self recovery. It’s Sod’s Law that just as you started motoring we had to exit. @RaYan E you had a good drive, that was a great pocket you found  (always follow the track my friend), and you managed to get yourself out of that sticky patch earlier in the drive when you had to slow down for the refusal ahead of you. @topgear you handled everything well and followed instructions to self recover when you too got stuck because of a refusal in front of you. Nice driving. @Hisham Masaad I don’t think you had any issues the entire drive, well done! Likewise @Jon M . Great drive guys, you all showed great patience too. I know it can be frustrating when you are farther back, but this is the joy of desert driving. @Athula Dharmadada and @Yasas Dharmadasa you weren’t without your moments today, some nice self-recovery skills from you.

A massive thanks to @Ashok chaturvedi who did a great job as 2nd lead, also @Islam Soliman who  was always on hand to help with the multiple refusals at the front of the convoy and likewise @Melenany who kept the back of the convoy moving and once again did fantastic job as sweep.

It was one of those drives, but we got there. Until our next adventure!
    😊

Thanks @Foxtrot Oscar and all my fellow drivers a very scenic drive with least number of stuck by anyone. The sand was a bit churned up in the last hour by loads of weekend drivers. The covid worry was tossed away by a bunch of tourist at the hill top almost 50 of them crowed at the top to watch the sunset. I may sound a bit lazy here but in the end there was line of shops inflating tyres for aed 10 and I obliged one of them 😁

  10. I am thankful to @Wrangeld for his sheer patience  on the drive and how he successfully conducted the stuck rescues as  General in the battlefield. My new FJ had a starting scare where the kill switch was not adapted for 2020 model and on engaging 4H it disconnected the power break and become manual plus I had a very irritating beeping that lasted the entire 6 hours of the drive. I have never seen or experienced so many stucks ever on any previous drives where nearly every car got into some trouble or other. I had pull out cars, used spade to dig and participated in 2 difficult popouts. Overall I thank my new FJ it was the smoothest drive I ever and can proudly claim that I never got stuck or refusal even once. The Pajero experience came real handy having a much more powerful car was simply awesome.

Finally the garage fixed the kill switch today and I am looking to do a another newbie drive before going to F+ then intermediate.

Thanks also to my other drive mates good team work overall.
