    Drive Report

I started the afternoon by making every member of the convoy aware of exactly what I expected from intermediate drivers on an Intermediate drive. Pace, no babysitting and if you have a refusal? Get yourself out of it!  I didn’t want to hear constant chatter on the radio, I wanted a drive like no other and by goodness did the convoy deliver!

We limbered up as usual in the smaller dunes, which offer excellent practice for the mammoth dunes that lay ahead. We swept around them at some pace, warming up our desert wheels. @Ilya Golubinsky 's mother asked for  bigger dunes, and who am I to disappoint someone’s mother?!

As we began to climb into the labyrinth of bowls we had a couple of refusals but nothing much, we continued and @GauravSoni experienced a nice crest which @Kailas tried in vain to dig him out of, we got the ropes and @GauravSoni was on the move again.

It’s fair to say that the initial climbs met with a fair share of refusals, I asked @GauravSoni to check his tyre pressure and after deflating he was back in the game and then some. Then @asifk found himself in a nice pocket of soft sand and the recovery saw his transmission oil heat up. We stopped to allow it time to cool down and got the magic spray out (water). That seemed to do the trick and we were on the move again.

I usually try to convey a sense of what a drive was like in these reports but it is difficult to truly reflect this afternoon’s drive. Perhaps my instructions over the radio would be better. “Climb, push it, push t , sweep the bowl, criss-cross, sweep, cross, push it push it! Control the descent , sweep, cross, sweep, momentum, stay high , cross, stay high, sweep. Cross, sweep, cross, climb PUSH IT PUSH IT!! OWN IT! YALLA! Repeat x 50 🤣

Thank you all so much for your excellent driving skills , you were all utterly fantastic and I had a great time leading you. Special note to @Hisham Masaad who was on his first IM and had a flawless drive and also @asifk who did exceptionally well. It was great to drive with @Francois Germishuys for the first time too. Love how you have control of that beast!

To @David Ortells, @siddharth maheshwari , @GauravSoni, @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQand @Ashok chaturvedi, you all had great drives, thank you.

Special thanks to @Ilya Golubinsky who once again was excellent as my second lead, to @Kailaswho kept an eye on everything at the front of the convoy and to @Islam Soliman who was sweeping at the back. Brilliant support!

And that was that, Sharjah’s Bowls….Owned!

    Until our next adventure. :)

That was an amazing drive @Foxtrot Oscar

The drive through endless bowls to reach up the dune made me feel like Tarzan swinging through the woods.

I had planned to set up my 360 cam halfway, but ditched that plan so that I could enjoy the drive and not worry about looking after the camera.

    Good job everyone.

See you all in the sand soon!!

I had tried this but nothing seemed to happen. What indication if any should I expect to see for confirmation of ESC being disabled?

    @Goutam,

You have to try in 4H. Once you disable traction control with single touch, then hold the traction control switch for 6-10 seconds. Now you should see "ESC off" in the information panel.

  3. @Pacific,

I drive Wrangler JL, I disable ESC and ABS using traction control switch. First step I normally do is to turn of traction control with one touch, followed by holding the traction control switch for 6-10 seconds. This disables the ESC and ABS.

Now what I had noticed is that ABS is only disabled when the vehicle is not accelerated. If you try to hold the traction control switch for 6-10 seconds while accelerating, only ESC gets disabled.

This works for me and I believe it should be the same for JK. Hope this helps.

After driving a lot further along the track due to having a lot of Carnity convoys starting from the same area, most of you managed to be there on time, and those who where a little late managed to get ready real quick. After a short briefing we lined up the convoy and were on our way.

With a couple of new fewbies it is always a bit of a gamble to see what level of drive to start with, but as we were all doing fine, we could push a little more. I did try to find some challenges in the technical area's as well as finding place to do a little of criss crossing and ridge riding.

I hope the lesson, while we were waiting during the fix of the pop out and the practicing while Rizwan adjusted his tyre pressure, meant the waiting was also enjoyable.

@Arman as a second lead you did a good job, just remember to keep a bit more distance, so you won't get in trouble when I do😜

@Kailas and @Francois Germishuys you did a fantastic job with recoveries and directions to keep everyone safe.

@Shehab Alawadhi glad I managed to get you stuck, @Danish Mohammad @Bernd Stucke @Rizwan Waheed @Mahmoud Asar @Mobeen Anwar @Abdul Rahman Abdul Kader @Szymon Stankiewicz a couple of refusals, self recoveries and a few stucks between us, I think you all did a great job and showed good teamwork, it was a pleasure to drive with you.

    See you all soon

    Another amazing drive by @Jeepie

We covered around 60 Kms, great stuff guys👍

Sand was really soft in some areas, but everyone managed well. We really didn't  have much of a hold up anywhere, pop out fix was relatively quick and some crusted situations quickly managed by shoveling.

    @Arman ,well done as SL

@Francois Germishuys, thanks for you support in recoveries.

@Shehab Alawadhi, thanks for giving me the soup sand challenge 😉

    See you soon!!

Me and my son are very excited to be back in Liwa. We had great fun last time on 2nd Dec. I am planning come over the Thursday evening from Dubai and set up a tent for the night. Can I set up the tent in the vicinity of the meeting point? If not suggest any other place.

    Hi @Goutam,

I am also planning to do the same. My contact number is 0507084704. Ping me

    Thanks

  6. I was lucky to get a 4 months used plastic bumper from Dubizzle at a throw away price. The owner changed to metal bumpers.

I had relocated the number plate to rear tyre, and cut the excess plate holder area on the bumper to make the bottom uniform to avoid scooping of sand while descending.

Will be looking to mount a aluminum plate below bumper as @Frederic advised.

This is very common issue in JL and we have seen this many times in the club. Goutam and Pancho sacrificed there in Liwa.

If metal bumper has no issue with RTA then go for that as 500 extra now is better than breaking fiber one again or modifying fiber bumper with plate beneath.

Make sure new metal bumper comes with rubber bumpstop then RTA will pass it even if its little different.

Thanks @Gaurav , will check if the metal bumper comes with rubber bumpstop.

Jeep being the ultimate off-road vehicle and JL should still be under warranty. Have you checked with Trading Enterprise? If you report it as a desert accident close to road side you can claim it from insurance. All you need to pay is the Police fine and insurance excess.

@Rahimdad, unfortunately I do not have offroad cover, thus insurance will not be coving that.

I will soon be getting an offroad insurance.

Is it possible that the bumper breaks from scooping up sand during a descent ? If that is the case (like pajeros) maybe an aluminum plate underneath the bumper would help to prevent this.

@Frederic, Yes the bumper breaks from scooping up sand during decent.

Replacing with a metal bumper might have two issues, one with RTA, and second it would add unnecessary weight to your car.

The number plate can easily be moved around by punching new holes.

If it's the scooping issue that Fred said, then a metal sheet to support the area would suffice.

    @Srikumar thanks, very valid points.

As mine is already broken I have to get new one, they charge around 1400 AED for new fiber bumper vs metal one which is around 1900AED. Metal one is Rubicon model and was told it doesn't have RTA issue (hopefully).

  9. Dear Wranglers,

Recently my Wrangler JL Sport's rear bumper got broken. I have noticed that this is a common issue and in the last couple of drives, @Goutam, @Nabil Bishara had also faced similar issue with rear bumper.

I had been to couple of garages to fix the bumper, but unfortunately the bumpers being fiber will be hard to fix. Also it is very likely that the same issue can happen again.

For stock JL/JK Sport, the issue with rear bumper is that the number plate area is placed below the bumper frame. This becomes the main contact area during dune basing. I was advised by the garages ,if you plan on using the stock fiber bumper, it would be better to cut the number plate area and mount the plate on the side.

In my case, as the bumper is already broken, I plan on replacing it with Rubicon metal bumper which will cost around 1900AED.

Please advice if any of you had come across other solution.

    Thanks,

    Kailas
