    DRIVE REPORT

We set off early morning on the sandy area across 2nd December Cafeteria, which is usually a busy place, but apparently at 7AM most offroaders, except the Carnity dudes, are still in bed :)

The plan was to start with some technical dunes in Suwaydan area, which is a bit of a scenic area with lots of vegetation, camels, and nowadays even bulldozers. Some of the bulldozer tracks allowed us to do some nice climbs so we made the best of it.

With the whole convoy moving swiftly, before we knew it we were reaching the road, and crossed it to make our way to Faya. A dune which needs no introduction anymore. We found it completely abandoned hence climbed one by one up via the side.

Everyone made it to the to the top, some with a few more attempts but that gave us a great opportunity to practice and see how traction control, center diff lock, lower tyre pressure, and upshifting can have a great impact on making to the top or not.

From there we took the swooping bowls all the way via Camel Rock, The Sphinx, and exited at the pylon track and made our way back towards Mahafiz Mosque. All in all a great morning with great people !

@Joseph Sebastian as my perfect second lead, keeping a close watch on my tracks and improving them where needed.

@Serhat Yalcinkaya you improve every drive. But for complete ease of mind i would recommend removing the front lip. Our marshal @Brette went through the same in his earlier days and is now offroading with full peace of mind.

@Udit S don't dismiss that little Prado too soon. It's capable of wonderful things.

@Antony Abraham this time incident free :)  well driven !!

@Mahmoud Taha i love your Xterra and the way you handle it !

@Vishal Nair you handle the big Pajero perfectly, really impressed with your driving skills !

@Kishore Venkat and @Yesu Yarlagadda both taking the powerful mighty Patrols in the sand. Nicely done guys !

@Beide Worku Controlling that big beast is not easy but you master it wonderfully !

@Joao at the back digesting the churned up tracks with ease. Great drive !!

Thanks for the wonderful support as always @Rizwanm2 ! Hope your co-pilot had a great morning as well :)

Thank you for the wonderful lead @Frederic.. looking forward to get some more dunes.. :)

Drive Report - Full Day Newbie Liwa Drive (No Yellow Truck)

We all set at the starting point well on time , just a few minutes past the planned 7.30 am start considering the fog. We all had a slightly extended briefing considering the challenging terrain we were venturing into. Driving along the dirt track and enjoying the sunrise , we were eager the see the vastness once Liwa opens up.

    D95E4C44-DB12-4D6B-A034-634E1C40EBBC.jpeg

The initial part of the drive for about 20-25 kms was free flowing into the massive dunes that we hardly had any radio chatter. While we ventured deeper , the dunes became more taller, more steeper and some sharp drops were inevitable. That's when I as a lead ventured into a slightly tricky area where one drop was ending into a soft patch where if you loose your momentum , one is bound to have a refusal or stuck. We had one car here which had that and all did their best to get the car out with some long shovelling sessions, cooling a overheating transmission , some weird-but safe tugging and finally a double rope tug which got the car out. With some small rerouting and as everyone drove out of this spot , we decided to exit the Pajero as overheating in a cool morning is something which meant definitely as we drive deeper it was bound to have the same issue as the terrain would get more challenging where once will have to use 4-L multiple times.

The closest route to dirt track took close to 90 min - as we had already discussed , no close exits in Liwa unlike in Dubai deserts. This meant we were almost back at the starting point by 12 noon , exit the car and head back. I chose a route as much as possible along the sabkhas/flats - considering the fact that were were heading in a direction which was slightly against the massive slip phases . We had multiple refusals , stucks, shoveling and many tugs as we drove along. I appreciate everyone's cooperation as we decided not to have a formal break for all cars but to refuel and rehydrate ourselves whenever we had a refusal/stuck.

I will be mentioning  the drive stats below which will give you all an idea as to why we (a bit disappointed myself) could not make it to the iconic Yellow truck. By around 2.30 pm to 3 pm, we were at a point which was equidistant from our starting point, the yellow truck and our planned exit at the desalination plant. Going to yellow truck potentially meant we would be driving in night , and in this terrain was not a safe option. We decided to take the route to the desalination plant skipping the yellow truck. We drove through multiple falt super soft patches, bowls, sharp and steep drops and finally made it to the exit on dirt track near desalination plant just when it was dark. To see everyone out safely was the whole motto, and we did it!

    E9536F15-A82C-49DD-A410-7DE45BC8CD1C.jpeg

@Patrick van der Loo played the 2nd lead to perfection, stopping in split second calls made by me in some very nasty spots. The ones to mention are - when I entered a slightly steeper bowl, another just as we were near the exit and i was stuck on re-laid sand and the last one when I ventured into s super soft bowl just before the exit. Had it not been these stops by you, we would have spent more time shoveling for sure😃

@Vishal Nair with his pajero was the one which had to be exit half way through the drive. Overheating transmission on your model Pajeros is a common issue was we discussed which has been seen multiple times with multiple drives. You need to install a extra transmission cooler with a switch which will save you from these issues when you push your car. You will switch on this only when on sand and turn it off when on tarmac. Considering this we had to exit you early as we would be using 4LLC multiple times ahead . You should also learn and make sure you engage the gears advised to you correctly- the best way to do this would be to practice next time you are on sand (while having a break) and engage the 4H, 4HLC and 4LLC and see how the gears sound and behave. This time around you were in 4HLC all the while which made you dig yourself further , which probably would have been a 5-10 min maneuvering if you were in the correct gear.

@Mawy did well with his pajero , in some refusals and stucks following as advised. At one spot he was  off track and landed himself into a soft pocket. we had to use double rope to pull him out as even though he was crawling out nicely, the sand there was way too soft. Rest of the challenging drive you did wonderfully well my friend.

@Rob Soughton learned the hard way with some refusals on soft sand long climbs as to why his Prado was unable to . As he started using the tiptronics , climbing in lower gears in 4 H was easier. You were very controlled in all the steep slip phase descents we had and it was wonderful to see that from a distance.

@Dinesh Kumar A too did well being behind the center forward. Driving on soft churned sand meant you would be having some refusals and as it got hot even a toyota had a overheating transmission 😆. We did cool it in quick time , and you were able to recover yourself in a soft patch.

@Muhammad Qasim drove a FJ at the back with good control and following the advises in soft patches. It is indeed challenging being at the back and driving following multiple churned tracks but you did well. At one spot a lot of counter steer meant you had a pop out which was fixed. It is always better to exit when you are not able to climb and reattempt. Well done buddy, and I believe your son had a nice time watching all the action unfolding.

@kiranshinde was the only fewbie on this drive and hence was at the back. He controlled his beast Y62 well most of the times which was wonderful to watch. Only at one spot coming down a angled slip phase , there was a bit too much fishtail which was very uncomfortable for me to watch from a distance. I humbly apologize  for being a bit loud on advising . If you are in a tight spot like that and are unable to acknowledge , the least you could do was to stop to prevent the situation worsening any further. Barring this , I believe you enjoyed the challenge at the back being newly promoted .

I have to mention my immense thanks to @Rizwanm2 and Carnity legend @Gaurav for supporting this drive. Your presence gave me the extra confidence to push all day long. All the advises, recoveries and the rerouting you guys did were flawless which kept the whole drive super safe in a super challenging terrain at newbie level. Some of the memorable ones being - recovering Vishals Pajero from the soft patch which took almost 90 min, double rope recovery of Mawy by rizwan under the watchful advises by gaurav, rerouting on the slip phases - and especially the last one where I danced on soft sand for quite some time . Only upon deflating to 8 psi I could dance and jump out of the soft bowl🤣. To complete a full day newbie drive in Liwa and getting everyone out safely was a awesome experience.

@Salman Farooq is this is your first drive with Carnity??

I see you don’t have any drives mentioned in your profile which means you have to join a absolute newbie drive first - mandatory in Carnity off road club.

Important check list for all members signed up on this drive

please read thoroughly and acknowledge by clicking totally agree

    1. Please ensure that you are there at the meeting point on 7:30 AM sharp. Late comers would be sent back.
    2. Firstly, get lots and lots of rest the previous day. The more the better as Liwa will not only challenge your vehicle but your mind as well. We would need your complete focus and fatigue due to less rest is the last thing that is needed on such a terrain. For those who prefer camping the previous night, you can do so at the starting point as its a nice spaced out area. Bring some firewood incase if you wish to have a bonfire to keep you warm. Cleaning up after the bonfire is mandatory.
    3. Ensure that your 4x4 is well serviced recently and all the lubes and fluids are topped up.
    4. 20 Liter / 40 litre fuel jerry can is needed depending on your vehicle. If you have any doubts, please post your query on the drive post and we will assist.
    5. A full fuel tank at the meeting point.
    6. Spare tyre should be in good working condition. If not been used recently, ensure that you take it out and check the condition properly. Also ensure that you have the wrench that can be used to remove your tyre (if needed). In the past we have seen that people upgrade their tyres but still keep the the original wrench which is of no use to remove the upgraded tyre. So please ensure that your car has the right tool to remove the tyres (if needed).
    7. Air compressor, proper shovel, flag, fire extinguisher, first aid kit,
    8. Fully charged radio (tuned to all Carnity Frequencies) with spare battery / radio. If you have a car charger for your radio, please bring it along.
    9. Please ensure that you know how to switch off traction control (turning off Air bags is not mandatory for this drive). If it requires pulling the fuse, please research before the drive or better still, post your queries on this drive post and we would assist.
    10. Car charger / battery pack for your mobile.
    11. Plenty of water, approx 5 litre per person per day.
    12. Bring along your breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc in easy to eat packing. We shall be having breaks in between the drive.
    13. Dry food, energy bar, cookies, nuts, crisp to munch while driving
    14. Bring garbage bags along to carry your trash. Littering in the desert is strictly prohibited.

@Chaitanya D 1 X20L can should be enough for 3.8/V6 Pajero right? please let me know if i need more. I also plan to be there overnight. :)

    DRIVE REPORT

    Dear Desert Wanderers,

It was a nice and chilling dawn when the convoy met yesterday at 6:30am.

Everyone made it to the meeting point quite on time and after an extensive briefing we were ready to move by 7:05am.

We warmed up crossing a long sabkha heading north east, then entered an area of nice long range dunes, where we spent quite some time roaming around and practicing some fun sidesloping.

The sand in the area was very churned up and with many tracks, which made the exercise way more complex, but worth it.

To the surprise of most in the convoy, we encountered several rock formations, which made the landscape, in the sunrise light, even more fascinating.

As we moved further deep into the desert, we managed to get some distance between our convoy and the other two that were roaming in the area, one of which led by @M.Seidam.

Quite early in the drive @Vishal Nair's Pajero, if I am not mistaken, showed some transmission overheating problems, so we stopped to address the issue. As discussed, most Pajeros suffer from transmission overheating which is often solved by installing a small additional fan in front of the dedicated radiator. Many Senior members in the club will be able to help on this. Our Marshal @Vanessa8580our Expert @Mehmet Volga or@GauravSonifrom the Support Team will be surely able to give you some advice.

As the convoy was doing very well, I decided to raise the bar a little and to throw in some more fun stuff, including a few straight-up / straight-down dune crossing.

It was approaching a high crest, followed by a long and steep descent, that @Asem Rashwan got crested in a moment of hesitation, giving Russ the chance to demonstrate to the whole convoy how a proper rope recovery is done.

The stop and regrouping came handy to review some basic concepts about sidesloping, dune crossing and fishtailing, after which we were again on the move.

With a few more refusals here and there we made our way further North, approaching the area of the Mighty Lisaili Dunes, maintaining a nice and fluid pace.

Too good to be true, me and @Russ were thinking.. Then it happened: @Asem Rashwan's Ford Explorer, after a severe overheating caused by repeated attempts to recover from a stuck situation in supersoft and churned up sand, totally lost power, with no chance to get the engine running.

Given the situation, as @Carnity's motto is that we never leave anyone behind, it was decided that we would attempt to tow the Ford Explorer out on the tarmac using my winch first, to get him on the flat, and then the endless horsepower of @Russ' beast.

Winching uphill a dead load was hard but it worked out, so the towing was next, but probably the tow point (a bolted one) had been taxed enough and it collapsed as soon as @Russ started to pull. Luckily no one was injured and nothing was damaged by the steel projectile and we are all here adding this story to the many adventures of our off-road memoirs.

Having explored in advance the best route out, the convoy had an easy exit to the Sabkha and eventually to the tarmac on D63 Seeh Al Salam Road, where we reached at 11:05am, exactly 4h after our departure.

Everyone in the convoy did extremely well

@Marcin Wronowski was an excellent 2nd lead. Always responsive to my instructions for small deviations.

@Premjit Vappala did very well with his Pajero. With time you'll learn to be less shy on your throttle and get addicted to flooring it 😂

@Mawy followed in a very disciplined and focused way, with a brilliant performance. I also appreciated his many smart comments and useful suggestions on the radio. Well done!

@Simon DawoodDawood had sometimes the temptation to fight gravity while sidesloping. Practice will help you control your fishtailing with the right combination of gas + countersteering , which will ultimately lead you to sustain longer sideslopes without challenging the unbeatable gravity.

@Vishal Nair proved to be more efficient with manual shift than his automatic gearbox when it comes to preventing transmission overheating 😉. Other than that, some refusals here and there were all part of the game, especially in non trivial terrain as the one we drove through yesterday.

@Asem Rashwan drove overall very well and had his good share of Desert Adventure for the day, but all is well what ends well. As @Russ recommended, please do not join any other drive before replacing both front tow points with proper ones, adequately strong and rated to withstand harsh tugs as happen off-road.

@Usman Basit had a moment of concern when he heard some weird noise from his front left wheel, but it disappeared as suddenly as it appeared, so he could continue the drive and get a full blast of fun with the rest of the convoy. His hesitations here and there will fade away with time and practice.

I had less visual on the cars at the back, but both @Rouaj and @Muhammad Qasim leveraged well their capable FJ Cruisers, struggling here and there in churned up sand, which was however quite unavoidable yesterday.

@Sergio Big Dawg certainly showed he has a few more drives outside @Carnity under his belly. Also, his legendary Y61 is, by definition, almost unstoppable..

@Tom B at the back led his capable Land Cruiser, a great (but heavy and thus not easy) off-roader. Coming to terms with counter-steering to control fishtailing will take time and practice, but is particularly important on a heavy long wheel base ride like his.

@Mohamad Ziad Alhennawi was comfortably at the back with his giant Hummer. As he noticed, the heavy weight of his beast requires a lot of ability in never losing momentum, as gravity won't make any discounts on an H3 😂😂.

Overall we covered 43.6km in 4h net, moving for 2h 33' and stopping for 1h 27'. While in movement, we kept an average speed of 17.1km/h, which means it was a fairly fast paced drive as most of the terrain allowed for a fast ride.

Congratulations to all, very well done but, most importantly, special thanks to @Russ who was all over the place, tugging, shoveling, giving instructions, providing valuable guidance, making my life way easier. Look at him at the top of a long slip face descent, guiding the whole lot down:

A perfect support and an excellent towing exercise at the end. Bravo!

See you soon in the sand!

@Lorenzo CandelpergherThank you for the whole support and education on the tail control🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻.. :) . i am getting my transmissions checked. see you next time..

@Vishal Nair when you have transmission overheating problems, the first thing you need to check is if your transmission oil needs to be replaced. If that is not the issue, try to drive in manuel gear so you don't shift gears as much as in automatic gear. If you still have issues, you will have to place an extra fan.

@Vanessa8580I just had my 10Km service in which they checked and said the transmission oil is perfect. after my second drive with @Chaitanya D where i had this issues first time, i did manual shifting for the second drive with no issues in transmission. in this drive i just changed it to Automatic for 20mins and the heat was up, but it did not stay for long. I am getting everything checked again before the LIWA drive. if required i would definitely put a fan.

We will be using Carnity Channel 3 (446,05625Mhz).

Our meeting poiint is confirmed at the end of the Al Qudra - Solar Park Road, next to the Pylon Track: https://goo.gl/maps/VurDujZbhkNZjGah7

See you tomorrow morning by no later 6:30am (sharp). If possible, try to reach a few minutes earlier, so that you can be ready earlier with your deflated tires and your flags and we can maximize the time we spend in the sand.

P.S.: dear @Br. San, no drop-outs for the time being, so you are currently not in the convoy. Please keep the website/email checked during the day, as in case there will be anyone withdrawing from the drive you'll get your spot.

    Let's do it. :)
